  • Sustainability of Nepal's community-based homestay ecotourism

    K C Anup, Anup K C et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ecotourism•2025

Health, hygiene, and safety (HHS) are critical issues in community-based homestay ecotourism (CBHE) to ensure its sustainability, given the realities and concerns of disease, epidemics, and pandemics. HHS measures must be followed to manage potential disease infections for hosts and guests interacting during CBHE experiences. To assess HHS policies and practices in CBHE in Nepal, and within the framework of a sustainable livelihood approach, semi…

  • Appropriateness and use of civic engagement, advocacy, and behavior change techniques in environmental education across the United States

Erica Elizabeth Meier, Robert B Powell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environmental…•2024

Recent research suggests that many environmental education (EE) programs for youth in the United States focus on meeting educational standards rather than using civic engagement and advocacy techniques to promote environmental literacy. We distributed a survey to members of several EE organizations to identify which civic engagement, advocacy, and behavior change techniques a sample of EE providers feel are appropriate to use for youth at differe…

  • The Village, the Elephant, and the State

Open Access•Lauren Redmore, Ipolokeng Katholo et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2023

Throughout the world, people resettle to reduce vulnerability to potentially dangerous wildlife, including elephants. In turn, they may become subject to development policies and practices that can either exacerbate or alleviate their vulnerability. Our ethnographic study in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, where 18,000 elephants share territory with 16,000 people, examines how resettlement decisions and settlement policies impacted vulnerability …

  • The Fatal Coupling of Race, State and Research on Disparities

    Aby Sene-Harper, Aby L Sène et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 27

Modern technology doesn’t only offer greater opportunities for leisure experiences. It opens the door for surveillance and disempowerment as well. As the justice-oriented endeavor of leisure researchers increased over the years, so too has their access to data sources on racialized people made possible by the advent of digital technology. Geospatial datasets are used to extrapolate leisure service disparities and social patterns in predominantly …

  • Digging Deeper

    Lauren N Duffy, Mariela Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 45

As interpretivist-constructivist and critical scholarship has advanced within leisure science, so too does the need for more comprehensive approaches for reflexivity. Reflexivity, which can be described as an act, capacity, or practice to self-critique one’s own biases that may influence the construction of knowledge, is an important means for meeting standards of goodness or quality within qualitative research. This study sought to strengthen le…

  • A case for Race scholarship

Harrison P Pinckney, Aishia Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Over the past 50 years, the relationship of Race and ethnicity with leisure has been examined in many ways. In this article, the authors first recommend that leisure research give attention solely to Race and provide a justification for this recommendation. Second, this article suggests leisure researchers have primarily viewed Race as a variable within leisure studies, thus providing limited insight into the relationship between Race and leisure…

  • Water governance research in Africa

    Ayodele Olagunju, G Thondhlana et al.•ARTICLE•Water International•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Africa has not received adequate attention in the growing number of studies on water governance. Using the Scopus database, 492 peer-reviewed articles published since 2000 on water governance across the continent were reviewed and informed the perspectives presented in this study. In addition to characterizing temporal and topical trends, our analysis highlights three dominant conceptual themes in existing studies - institutional, discursive and …
