Conditional hospitality? How applicants’ backgrounds shape host support for refugees
Public attitudes toward hosting foreign populations are shaped by a complex interplay of legal status, ethnic-religious background, and geographic proximity. This study examines these dynamics in the Catalan context within Spain, leveraging a randomized survey experiment conducted in late 2022. Respondents were randomly assigned to consider refugees from Ukraine or Syria and economic migrants from Belarus or Jordan, with settlement options either…

Culture compensates for weak institutions: Determinants of attitudes toward free-riding across the world
This study investigates the factors contributing to cross-cultural variation in the disapproval of free-riding behaviors such as tax evasion, fare dodging, and benefits fraud. While some cross-cultural researchers contend that attitudes toward these behaviors exhibit minimal variance due to a universal value of fairness, others adopting an institutional perspective argue that significant differences can be explained by factors like government eff…
Development, Institutions, and Identity: Reshaping Europe’s Post–Cold War Moral Landscape
Post–Cold War Europe has become a scene of a grueling contestation over questions of morality, with key players being the EU and Russia. The legacy of the Cold War on the moral beliefs of European nations and their transformation over the last three decades requires an examination. We advance theory toward the potential role of development, institutions , and identity , associated with the Cold War division and continued differentiation at presen…
Values in Crisis: Societal Value Change under Existential Insecurity
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on societies, with possible consequences for their fundamental values. Inglehart's revised modernization theory links societal values to the underlying subjective sense of existential security in a given society (scarcity hypothesis), while also claiming that influences on values diminish once individuals reach adulthood (socialization hypothesis). An acute existential crisis such as the COVID-19 pa…
Patterns of change in the justifiability of euthanasia across OECD countries
Introduction The public's justifiability of euthanasia has increased as more countries have adopted laws permitting a range of end-of-life practices. Despite this trend, there is a dearth of longitudinal and comparative studies investigating attitudes toward euthanasia. Consequently, it remains unclear whether this rise in justifiability is a period-specific trend or generational change. Methods We analyzed data from the European and World Values…
The Burden of a Violent Past: Formative Experiences of Repression and Support for Secession in Catalonia
This letter studies the impact of past violence and repression on current territorial preferences in a contemporary democracy. Does a violent past lay the grounds for pro-secessionist preferences, or does it lead individuals to cling on to the territorial status quo? We study whether exposure to the events of the Spanish Civil War and its immediate aftermath made people more or less likely to support Catalan secession from Spain. Our analysis emp…
In-person school reopening and the spread of Sars-CoV-2 during the second wave in Spain
We investigate the effects of school reopening on the evolution of COVID-19 infections during the second wave in Spain studying both regional and age-group variation within an interrupted time-series design. Spain's 17 Autonomous Communities reopened schools at different moments in time during September 2020. We find that in-person school reopening correlates with a burst in infections in almost all those regions. Data from Spanish regions gives …
Challenging the Gender Gap in Political Interest
Embedding randomized experiments in representative surveys of the Catalan population, this article shows that the survey instrument commonly used to measure citizens’ interest in politics is far from gender-neutral. By implicitly associating the political to male-oriented issues and male-dominated actors and domains, it artificially amplifies the gender gap, particularly by depressing women’s reported interest. The first experiment captures respo…
The Rhythm of Modernization: How Values Change over Time
In The Rhythm of Modernization, Raül Tormos analyses the pace at which belief systems change across the developed world during the modernization process. It is often assumed that value change follows the slow rhythm of generational replacement. This book, however, reports trends that contradict this assumption in the field of values. Challenging Inglehart’s modernization theory, the transition from traditional to modern values happens much quicke…

Question-Order Effects in the Evaluation of Political Institutions in Decentralized Polities
This research studies question-order effects in the evaluation of political institutions in socially heterogeneous regions within decentralized countries. Split-ballot experiments were embedded in 3 representative surveys fielded in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Significant consistency effects were spotted in all samples. Respondents who first evaluated the relatively less valued institutions of one governmental level assessed less favorably t…
Does Contextual Change Affect Basic Human Values? A Dynamic Comparative Multilevel Analysis Across 32 European Countries
This article examines the relationship of stable contextual differences and contextual change with the endorsement of Schwartz’s (1992) two basic value dimensions—Openness-to-Change versus Conservation and Self-Enhancement versus Self-Transcendence. Using six waves of the European Social Survey, an extension of multilevel analysis is used which combines both a cross-national comparative and a dynamic analysis of values. The hierarchical data stru…
Economic expectations and support for secession in Catalonia: Between Causality and Rationalization
Support for independence from Spain has sharply increased in recent years in Catalonia. According to all available evidence, public opinion has shifted from an overwhelmingly pro-autonomy position to an increasingly pro-independence stance. How can we explain such widespread support for secession in a democratic context? Traditionally, national identity has been regarded as the main explanatory factor, but recent accounts tend to underline the ef…
Postmaterialist Values and Adult Political Learning. Intracohort Value Change in Western Europe
Research on value change and stability tends to underline the importance of generational effects, Inglehart's theory of post-materialism being an example of this. According to his theory, formative experiences shape the values of each age-cohort, and social change takes place progressively due to the force of generational replacement. This article analyzes survey data covering a wider period of observations than the one Inglehart used to draw his…
