  • Imagining Miami: Ethnic Politics in a Postmodern World

Donna R Gabaccia, Sheila L Croucher et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Southern History•1999

Miami has long captured the world's attention in provocative ways. During the 1980s, a series of violent racial disturbances focused national and international attention there as analysts and observers scrambled to explain the demise of the Magic City. What has emerged is a popular image of Miami as an urban area in which three distinct ethnic groups- Hispanics, Blacks, and Anglos- are pitted against one another in a battle for limited political,…

  • Urban ethnic politics in the post‐modern city: Comparing Miami and Toronto

    Sheila L Croucher, Sheila Croucher•ARTICLE•Space and Polity•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This paper synthesises variants of post‐modern political theory in order to examine contemporary urban ethnic politics in Miami, Florida, and Toronto, Ontario. Cities in general, and Miami and Toronto in particular, are conceptualised not as foundational entities to be excavated in search of pre‐given data, but as texts—configurations of signs, symbols and codes to be read, interpreted and analysed. The focus is on race and ethnicity as socially …

  • Constructing the Image of Ethnic Harmony in Toronto, Canada: The Politics of Problem Definition and Nondefinition

    Open Access•Sheila L Croucher, Sheila Croucher•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•1997•Cited by: 16•References: 28

The author applies a social constructionist approach to the issue of urban ethnic relations, arguing that analyzing the political processes that construct urban images, issues, and identities will illuminate arenas of power and conflict obscured by other approaches. Toronto, known for harmonious ethnic relations, is ideal for a case study of how urban images are constructed and maintained and how certain conditions, issues, and grievances are not…

  • The success of the Cuban success story: Ethnicity, power, and politics

    Sheila L Croucher, Sheila Croucher•ARTICLE•Identities•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 23

This article examines the convergence of various forces that constructed a public image of Cuban Americans in the United States as a politically united, socially homogeneous, and economically successful ethnic group. The claims that comprise the Cuban “success story” are not well‐grounded in an objective, empirical reality, but do reflect the historical interplay of power and politics locally, nationally, and internationally. The focus is on how …
