Intergenerational Conflicts, Cultural Restraints and Suicide: Experiences of Young African People in Adelaide, South Australia
The Lived Experience of Caring for an Australian Military Veteran With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
There is limited literature on the experience of caring for an intimate partner with a mental health condition. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health condition for military veterans; yet, little is known about how partners experience and cope with these caring relationships. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach, we collected data through individual interviews with 20 female partners of male veterans diagnosed w…
The social determinants of health for people with type 1 diabetes that progress to end‐stage renal disease
OBJECTIVE: Self-management of type 1 diabetes over a lifetime is complex and challenging even in the best of circumstances, and the social environment can be a powerful determinant of health behaviours and outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify how social determinants of health can impact on the capacity of young people to manage their glycaemic control. METHODS: The findings emerged from a constructivist grounded theory approach through…
Politics of Evidence: The Communication of Evidence by ‘Stakeholders’ when Advocating for Tobacco Point‐of‐sale Display Bans in Australia
There is a tension in the policy field about the way that the policy process should occur and the manner in which evidence should inform policy decisions. This article presents findings from a qualitative study on the introduction of point‐of‐sale tobacco display bans in Australia to provide an insight into the way this public policy was introduced and the way that evidence was used and communicated to influence the policy outcome. This study hig…
Empowerment, patient centred care and self‐management
Background Patient or person centred care is widely accepted as the philosophy and practice that underpins quality care. An examination of the Australian National Chronic Disease Strategy and literature in the field highlights assumptions about the self‐manager as patient and a focus on clinical settings. Objective and Conclusion This paper considers patient or person centred care in the light of empowerment as it is understood in the health prom…
Former Refugees and Community Resilience: Papering Over' Domestic Violence
The efforts of new, former refugee communities to grow their legitimacy as citizens often in hostile host environments puts community needs at odds with individual needs. From an analysis of interviews with service providers across two states in Australia, and borrowing the concept of ‘papering over’, we demonstrate how these tensions impact on women in these communities building resilience to domestic violence. Despite community being vital for …
Resilience and Survival: Refugee Women and Violence
Resilience has been said to be a particular quality of former-refugee women, many of whom have experienced torture, violence and intimidation in their countries of origin, during flight across borders, in refugee camps or detention and during resettlement. This article asks whether resilience is a useful concept in the context of refugee women's experiences of violence and whether there are any dangers associated with its use in this domain. It d…

The Morality of Immigrant Home Ownership: Gender, work and Italian-Australian sistemazione
Studies on Australian migrants and housing consistently confirm that the Italianborn have the highest home-ownership rates of all birthplace groups in Australia. Only a few studies have suggested explanatory factors, including agrarian histories and economic aspirations. This paper demonstrates that home ownership for post-war Italian migrants to Australia was indeed conditioned by these and other factors, but within the broader process of migrat…
Unwrapping the Parcel: An Examination of Culture Through Italian Australian Home Ownership
Critics of multiculturalism have revealed the limiting notion of culture within Australia's multicultural policy. Culture is not transported, but is constantly in process. Culture is (re)developed in the process of migration and settlement, and it is structured by broader economic and political forces. An examination of Italian Australian migrant experiences of family homes in Italy, and accommodation on arrival, shows what such a culture looks l…
