  • Astral Symbolism on the Pre-Romanesque Relief in Keutschach (Hodiše) Astralna simbolika predromanskega reliefa v Hodišah (Keutschach)

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015

The author attempts to prove that the pre-Romanesque relief on the facade of the parish church of St George in Keutschach (Hodiše) in Austrian Carinthia is a depiction of the Orion constellation. He justifies his theory with historical and art-historical facts. The main emphasis is laid on the fact that traces of late Classical astral mythologisation and deification are also recognisable in the Slovenian folk tradition

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015

Are there elements of shamanism in Slovenian folklore tradition, or is it more adequate to use terms like spirit possession or ecstasy? The author’s conclusion, which is based Slovenian data and on comparative literature, is that it is difficult to differentiate these terms in practice. He also explains the possible original meaning of the names kresnik and vedomec

  • The Image of the Real World and the World Beyond in the Slovene Folk Tradition Podoba sveta in onstranstva v slovenskem ljudskem izročilu

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015

In the Slovene folk tradition descriptions of the “world axis” in the form of the world mountain and the cosmic tree were preserved. This vertical axis linked the spheres of the underworld, the earth and the sky, representing the communicational channel among them. The world of people, deities, demons and souls of the deceased was installed in such “coordinate system”. Christianity gave the vertical axis another meaning, while the concept of huma…

  • Kresnik: An Attempt at a Mythological Reconstruction Kresnik: poskus mitološke rekonstrukcije

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The Slovene Kresnik tradition has numerous parallels in Indo-European mythologies. Research has established connections between the myth about a hero’s fight with a snake (dragon) and the vegetational cult of Jarilo/Zeleni Jurij. The Author establishes a hypothesis about Iranian influences (resemblance to figures of Yima/Yama and Mithra) and outlines a later transformation of Kresnik in the period of Christianization

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2014

The author discusses records of the documents of two inquisition processes from the years 1583 and 1596 against a Friulian miller who was condemned as a member of the sect of banandanti, discovered by Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg and published in his famous book Cheese and Worms (1976). The Benandanti claimed that they were secretly gathering “in spirit” and fighting four times a year with sorcerers and witches in night battles. He compares t…

    Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Ethnologie française•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Od staroslovanskega Svarožiča/Radogosta do slovenskega Kresnika From the Ancient Slavic Svarožič/Radogost to the Slovene Kresnik

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2010

The mythological figure of the god Svarožič/Radogost is known from relatively recent sources dating from the period from the eleventh to fourteenth century. These sources suggest that eastern and western Slavs venerated him as the deity of fire, Sun and war, and ethnological and linguistic data point to his presence in the territory of southern Slavs as well. Since the name and the function of Svarožič/Radogost is so widespread, a more detailed e…

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2009

    Open Access•Zmago Šmitek•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2008•References: 3

There have been significant linguistic and cultural ties between Europe and India. They may be attributed to the common Indo-European cultural tradition spreading through Eurasia by way of conquests and migrations. Another important factor is their cultural ties, both in the past and more recently (the influence of ancient high cultures, commercial contacts, etc.). The process of Indo-Europeanization had doubtlessly been a long, gradual, and comp…
