The exhibition The Arctic-While the Ice is Melting opened at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm in 2019 and is still on show, describing life in a changing climate and allowing its visitors to encounter several voices and perspectives of the past, present, and future. The three-year preparation for the exhibition involved collaboration between the Nordic Museum and Stockholm University. The museum was able to present transnational narratives with the…

  • Special Issue

    Open Access•Lotten Gustafsson Reinius•ARTICLE•Journal of Northern Studies•2021

Nowhere on earth is global warming happening as fast today as in the northernmost region. In many cases the situation is acute for both humans and other animals. • The Ritual Labor of Reconciliation

    Open Access•Lotten Gustafsson Reinius•ARTICLE•Museum Worlds•2017

Having a dual perspective as researcher of expressive culture and museum curator, I engage in the ceremonial aspects of repatriation through a practice-based “museology from within.” Focusing on a handover of human remains by the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm to indigenous claimants from Australia (2004), I combine material from my own participant observation with sources such as interviews and written and photographic documentation. The aim…

  • Sensing Through White Gloves

    Lotten Gustafsson Reinius•ARTICLE•The Senses and Society•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 9

The article discusses collectibles acquired by Swedish missionaries and military officers active within the ill-reputed Congo Free State (1885–1908). Objects are approached here not primarily as tokens of Congolese material culture but as traces of a transnational cultural history and as points of entry to a critical museology. Drawing on case studies of collections I discuss the ways in which artifacts have been selected, joined and charged with…

  • La leçon des choses

    Lotten Gustafsson Reinius•ARTICLE•Ethnologie française•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Museisamlingarnas sociomateriella dynamik

    Open Access•Lotten Gustafsson Reinius, Eva Silvén et al.•ARTICLE•Nordisk Museologi•1970•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The sociomaterial dynamics of museum collections” is an overarching research idea connecting three separate projects, with the aim of creating new knowledge about the roles of collections and collecting in the shaping of culture and society. The program includes three Swedish national museums that have been decisive in defining Sweden, Swedishness and the surrounding world – the Nordiska Museet (Swedish cultural history) the National Historical M…
