Predictors of problematic internet use in the everyday internet activities of a French representative sample: The importance of psychological traits
Revealing preferential circulation—how the use of places serves localized entrepreneurs’ capabilities
With the aim of fostering innovation, many cities have promoted places to provide resources for entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, little work has been done to determine how these resources are mobilized by entrepreneurs, and how a collection of places in a given city-region can support their efforts. In this article, we argue that entrepreneurs attend different resource-producing places, and that the pattern thus drawn, called preferential circulation…
Sharon Zukin, The Innovation Complex: Cities, Tech and the New Economy
« Le logiciel dévore le monde ». Cette phrase de Marc Andresseen (2011), investisseur renommé de la Silicon Valley et observateur avisé du monde numérique, traduit comment le logiciel et plus largement le numérique se sont imposés au cœur de la vie économique et sociale. Mais il faut aussi y voir une forme de déterminisme, comme si au fond il était inéluctable que le pouvoir appartienne désormais à ceux qui font le code, tels de « nouveaux goliat…
Anatomy of a techno-creative community – the role of brokers, places, and events in the emergence of projection mapping in Nantes
This article aims to study the role of brokers, places, and events in the structuring of a community of innovation whose practice is at the intersection of art and technology – projection mapping. Using an exploratory case study, we observe the relationships between the different actors who form a community, sharing a common interest in a techno – creative practice – but whose collective innovation dynamic is only in its beginnings and remains un…
Building and nurturing grassroots innovation: A policy framework based on the local commons
Innovation policies are increasingly questioned by researchers and policymakers in the face of the changing economy and with regards to the role played by local grassroots initiatives in driving structural change at the regional level. This paper aims to enrich existing policy frameworks by emphasizing the notion of local commons as a means to drive local innovation dynamics. Building on this latter concept, two policies are presented to suppleme…
Reconsidering the dynamics of local knowledge creation: Middlegrounds and local innovation commons in the case of FabLabs
This contribution investigates the dynamics of knowledge creation at the local level, building, in particular, on the interactions between formal and informal entities. Two theoretical constructions are brought together in order to do so: the middleground concept and the notion of commons. By associating these two concepts, the goal is to introduce a revised perspective on local dynamics of knowledge, which details how informal and formal entitie…
Innovating by bricolage: How do firms diversify through knowledge interactions with FabLabs
This paper provides some insights into the way a fabrication laboratory (FabLab) increases local entrepreneurial capabilities by offering a new and collective way to co-shape novelties based on a bricolage mode of innovation. With an original survey of 48 international FabLabs, it was observed that FabLabs tend to co-produce more unstabilized prototypes or drafts when interacting with small firms, whereas they co-produce more spin-offs and relate…
