Avoiding the Trap of Parallelism
The present paper deals with a specific argumentative feature found in the Laozi, namely, "interlocking parallel style" or IPS. It shows how knowledge of this structure can be helpful for the understanding and interpretation of the text. At the same time, the paper demonstrates that, in some cases, rigorously imposing IPS can be counterproductive. To this end, the paper analyses Laozi 29, the commentary to it penned by Wang Bi, as well as a close…
Righteous War in Early Daoist Classics
This paper examines the concept of "righteous warfare" as employed in three early Chinese texts associated with Daoist philosophy: the excavated manuscript Huangdi sijing 黃帝四經 (The Yellow Emperor's Four Classics), the Wenzi 文子 (Book of Master Wen), and the Huainanzi 淮南子 (Book of the Master of Huainan). At first glance, their promulgation of offensive righteous warfare seems at odds both with the Laozi 's 老子 (Book of the Old Master) condemnations …
Seeing and Hearing in the Laozi and Zhuangzi and the Question of Authority and Authenticity
The present paper investigates the significance of visual and auditory metaphors as used in the main Daoist classics the Laozi 老子 and Zhuangzi 莊子. While both works disparage the role of the senses, they nonetheless employ a large number of metaphors related to the sense experience. It is the contention of the author that examining these metaphors against the backdrop of the main modern theories dealing with characteristics of vision and hearing i…
The Zhou Xun 周訓 and “Elevating the Worthy” ( Shang Xian 尚賢)
The present paper aims to investigate the idea of “elevating the worthy” ( shang xian 尚賢) as it appears in the newly found manuscript Zhou xun 周訓. This manuscript is part of the Peking University collection ( Beijing daxue cang Xi-Han zhushu 北京大學藏西漢竹書), presumably copied in the first half of the first century b.c.e . In sharp contrast to most recently discovered manuscripts promulgating “elevating the worthy,” the Zhou xun introduces the meritocr…
Reflections on artisan metaphors in theLaozi老子
In this article, I argue that theLaozi老子 offers a variety of cosmogenic accounts, including the one expressed by means of the artisan metaphors of "uncarved wood" (pu樸), "vessels" (qi器), and "cutting" (zhi制). These metaphors and the images related to them often appeared in the given context in ancient Chinese literature depicting the physical emergence of the world as a process of progressive differentiation out of the original state of "chaos." …
