Encyclopaedias in newspapers in British colonial America and the early United States
In this article, relying on Readex's electronic database ‘Early American Newspapers, Series 1, 1690–1876: From Colonies to Nation’, I use the evidence of newspapers to construct a picture of the encyclopaedias most mentioned in British North America and the early United States during the period before 1790. I begin by explaining my methodology and reviewing other approaches to studying the American market for encyclopaedias before 1790. Then, wor…
Verbs and Adjectives to Nouns
This article examines the changing forms of headwords in the partial differentiation of encyclopedias away from dictionaries from the late seventeenth century to the late nineteenth century. In the past, this differentiation has mostly been studied as a process of reducing lexical content in encyclopedias and reducing encyclopedic content in dictionaries, but it also manifested itself in the grammatical forms of allowable headwords. Specifically,…

Chapter nine. Two French Konversationslexika of the 1830s and 1840s: The Dictionnaire de la conversation et de la lecture and the Encyclopédie des gens du monde was published in Translation and Transfer of Knowledge in Encyclopedic Compilations, 1680–1830 on page 201.
When History Caught Up with Historians
Thanks in part to the influence of Friedrich Brockhaus’s Konversations-Lexikon, a German encyclopedia inaugurated in 1796, biographies of the living had become unremarkable in Europe’s encyclopedias by the early nineteenth century. Today, they are pervasive. Between 1674 and 1750, they remained rare and controversial in the alphabetical ancestors of the modern encyclopedia. In this article, I explain why, and show how encyclopedists’ practices ev…

The European encyclopaedia from 1650 to the twenty-first century
First taking shape during the seventeenth century, the European encyclopedia was an alphabetical book of knowledge. For the next three centuries, printed encyclopedias in the European tradition were an element of culture and peoples' lives, initially just among Europe's educated elite but ultimately through much of the literate world. Organized around themes such as genre, economics, illustration, and publishing, The European Encyclopedia is the …

A Laissez-Faire Encyclopedia
A Laissez-Faire Encyclopedia?A Comparative View of Diderot as Editor of the Encyclopédie Jeff Loveland (bio) The goal of this article is to evaluate Denis Diderot’s work not as the leading contributor to the Encyclopédie (1751–72) but as its editor. Such evaluations have been made regularly in studies of Diderot and the Encyclopédie, but they are often made in passing and outside of any relevant comparative framework. Here, building on previous r…
Wikipedia and encyclopedic production
Wikipedia is often presented within a foreshortened or idealized history of encyclopedia-making. Here we challenge this viewpoint by contextualizing Wikipedia and its modes of production on a broad temporal scale. Drawing on examples from Roman antiquity onward, but focusing on the years since 1700, we identify three forms of encyclopedic production: compulsive collection, stigmergic accumulation, and corporate production. While each could be cha…
Poinsinet's Edition of the Naturalis historia (1771–1782) and the Revival of Pliny in the Sciences of the Enlightenment
This paper analyses the revival of Pliny's Naturalis historia within the scientific culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, focusing on a French effort to produce an edition with annotations by scientists and scholars. Between the Renaissance and the early eighteenth century, the Naturalis historia had declined in scientific importance. Increasingly, it was relegated to the humanities, as we demonstrate with a review of edi…

Encyclopaedias and Genre, 1670‐1750
This article examines genres of general encyclopaedias in western Europe from 1670 to 1750. My approach is twofold. First, by examining references to genres in discourse about encyclopaedias, I will try to determine whether consensus existed about the kinds of general encyclopaedias. Second, I will evaluate late seventeenth‐ and early eighteenth‐century claims about the kinds of encyclopaedias in light of works' contents to arrive at a similar bu…

Unifying Knowledge and Dividing Disciplines
The alphabetical encyclopedias that flourished in Europe after the sixteenth century were easy to consult but open to criticism for breaking up knowledge and destroying its unity. Lacking the prescribed course of reading of textbooks, treatises, and thematically organized encyclopedias, such works invited readers to choose their own points of entry and subsequent trajectories. Not only did the "circle of knowledge" at the origin of the encycloped…
Panckoucke and the Circle Squarers
This article chronicles the mathematical career of the publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke and contextualizes his only published work of non-commercial mathematics, a "Mémoire" proving the impossibility of squaring the circle, first published in 1765. Panckoucke's "Mémoire" illuminates several of the cultures he participated in—the minor eighteenth-century sub-cultures of popular mathematics and circle-squaring, as well as the more familiar ones …

Poststructuralism and the New Humanism
THE TOWER OF BABEL by Pieter Breugel the Elder depicts our linguistic research as a titanic collective enterprise requiring the efforts of an organized, hard-working multitude. The image of the Tower of Babel can be seen as a representation of the structuralist movement as well. Closely examined, the painting's laboring masses surprise us with their general movement away from the tower and toward us, the viewers--so that we can imagine the title …
