Hungry Listening
Stó:lō scholar Dylan Robinson's Hungry Listening is a treatise on how to approach, engage with, and listen to/with Indigenous ways of knowing. One major premise is simple: musical undertakings that involve Indigenous musics and/or musicians have reified and continue to reify colonizing power structures. Nevertheless, what he offers in response is complex and necessarily impartial, since no one answer exists. The decolonizing work remains in the h…

The Social Poetics of the Red River Jig in Alberta and Beyond
The Red River Jig is a fiddle tune and a dance form that have particular resonance for First Nations and Métis peoples in Northern and Western Canada. Here I follow the dance form’s practice across diverse settings in time and space. This article is a part of a larger project in which I am analyzing the nexus of Métis identity, performance, and heritage; using Michael Herzfeld’s concept of “social poetics” (2005) to gauge the Red River Jig not on…
Fiddler on the Move
Fiddler on the Move is "neither a chronology nor a comprehensive survey" of klezmer music, according to the dust jacket. Instead, Mark Slobin applies his recent theoretical and methodological projects onto klezmer phenomena. Slobin would probably argue (and I would concur) that the klezmer terrain, as in other heritage musics, deserves the multiplexed treatment he provides

The Emergence of Color Cognition from Color Perception
Reporting isomorphism between the perception and cognition of color, this article speculates upon how the two might interrelate and how that relation might be constrained. A pilot study of color perception revealed differences in the perception of color by sex and by eye color of subject. In the present study, we examine results of a triadic sorting task of color terms, finding that for the nine most salient terms in the subjects' color cognition…
Salience Counts
Independent models of basic and nonbasic color terms are combined to explore the domain as a whole. We analyze an elicited set of English color terms, ranked by a combined frequency and order of mention salience index. We find that (1) basic color terms emerge intact as a distinctive category, and (2) the remaining types of terms array themselves in an extended pattern of distribution with respect to the domain's broader scheme of lexical, organi…
