Defining social innovation for post-secondary educational institutions: A concept analysis
Education, research, and contribution to society through innovation are the three missions of post-secondary educational institutions. There is a gap in understanding the concept of social innovation for post-second educational institutions. A clear definition would: (a) guide institutional strategic direction and supports, (b) recognize and reward academic research in social innovation, and (c) enable accurate measurement of outcomes and impact …
An attempt at exhausting a place in Shetland: Field)notes From a (Very) Small Island
In what follows, I outline the possibility of directly applying Georges Perec's An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris (2010) to the practice of ethnography. Based on 2 weeks of anthropological fieldwork on the remote Shetland Island of Foula, I attempt a translation of Perec's careful observations of an urban square in Paris in the 1970s into the context of an ethnography in this remote, rural location. After outlining the connections between…
Leadership and Team-Based Care
Do effective endeavors require hierarchy, a chain of command with relationships defined by subordination? Rather than hierarchy, I suggest that what groups really need to be effective is clear structure: defined relationships (leadership and goals), set standards, shared respect, and a means for managing conflict
Everyday Afterlife: Walter Benjamin and the politics of abandonment in Saskatchewan, Canada
In this paper I draw on Walter Benjamin's understanding of the flâneur, memory and history to discuss my recent ethnographic fieldwork on the cultural history of abandoned spaces and places in rural Saskatchewan, Canada. By utilizing Benjamin's notion of historical accumulation that is based in individual perception, I ask how abandoned spaces can create reflexive textual meaning through the process of historical accumulation in space. Additional…
P1-330 Inequalities in dental caries: The role of NMES intake
Introduction Dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases of childhood in the UK, with a disproportionate burden experienced by the most disadvantaged groups. Non-milk extrinsic sugar (NMES) intake, poor oral hygiene and acidogenic bacteria are considered the main risk factors for caries, however, their role in explaining the observed inequalities has not been fully explored. The aim of the study is to assess the extent to which these fact…

Aesthetics and Painting
The book opens with a large and important question of intellectual motive: ‘Can philosophy reveal something about painting that might otherwise remain hidden or obscure: in what ways might it deepen our understanding?’ Gaiger is too decent to push forward the companion question, which he neverthless implies: ‘Can pseudo-philosophy—spurious sophistication—obscure things that might otherwise become clear; in what ways might it make our understandin…
On the Possibility of Spectral Ethnography
This article reflects on the possibility of engaging in a kind of ethnography of absence, an anthropology of people, and places and things that have been removed, deleted, and abandoned to the flows of time and space. Here, the author suggests a mode of ethnographic inquiry that performs an archaeology of the emptied present and of the vacant spaces of culture. Using recent ethnographic fieldwork in the North American High Plains as the basis of …

The Effects of Conductive Hearing Loss on Linguistic Performance among Aboriginal Children
For many years researchers have documented the high incidence of otitis media (middle ear disease) and hearing impairment among Aboriginal children. While basically suggesting medical intervention and socio-economic development as the main remedies of this situation, there has been some indication of a need for compensatory measures aimed at the education of these children (Stuart et at, 1972
