Grand funerary stelae (2nd–3rd c. AD) of the microregion of Musti (El Krib, Tunisia)
New research in the microregion of Musti (El Krib) in N Tunisia in 2019–2023 has revealed unpublished 2nd–3rd-century AD funerary monuments featuring rich iconography, including a female figure beside the altar and two pigs. These items and other published epigraphic and anepigraphic monuments from the fertile microregion stand out from other tombstones in Roman Africa. Both the type of monument and its relief decoration distinguish these objects…
Praetorian Prefects of Emperor Commodus
The article presents the history of ten praetorian prefects of Emperor Commodus. The prosopographical method used by the author of the article is extremely useful in the studies on individuals in the society of Imperium Romanum. In this type of research, it is particularly important to note that praefecti praetorio as a clerical elite were very well represented in ancient sources, which renders historical material highly representable for this gr…
Duncan-Jones, Richard, Power and Privilege in Roman Society
R. Duncan-Jones (to whom I refer below as D-J) is a respected scholar of antiquity known primarily for his many excellent studies on Roman economy, specifically that of Italy and the provinces (mostly Roman North Africa). So far, he has been less involved with problems which fall under the history of certain social groups, officials’ careers or, more broadly, the functioning of Roman administration. However, in his most recent book, D-J attempts …

Kontrowersje wokół karier dwóch wyzwoleńców cesarskich – prokuratorów
Artykuł przedstawia kontrowersyjne kariery dwóch wyzwoleńców cesarskich: Aureliusa (?) Saturninusa i Ulpiusa Paeana, którzy pełnili funkcje prokuratorskie w II w. Zdaniem wielu badaczy wyzwoleńcy ci pełnili jedynie funkcje asystentów ekwickich prokuratorów w ramach „nierównej kolegialności”. Zdaniem autora sprawowali oni funkcje prokuratorskie samodzielnie, bez ekwickiego przełożonego.
Władza i urzędnicy w starożytnym Rzymie. Uwagi wstępne
The collegium (or officium)
The creation of the procurator summarum rationum and Beryllus’ title rationalium vicarius listed in IRCPacen 121 have been major arguments in favour of accepting that changes were made to the financial administration in the second half of the 2nd century, and that a reform of the officium a rationibus was carried out by Marcus Aurelius (between 166 and 169), because from then on a procurator a rationibus (trecenarius) and a procurator summarum ra…
