In Search of Truth in the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies: New Approaches to a Philosophical and Rhetorical Novel of Late Antiquity
The contributors of this volume set out to explore some new approaches to the fourth-century Christian novel traditionally known as the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies or Klementia . They raise and answer questions about this narrative by approaching it as an original rhetorical, and philosophical novel. The volume seeks to improve understanding of this text as a late antique novel with its own textual unity. It pays attention both to its literary qua…
Death and the Maiden in Philostratus, About Apollonius of Tyana 4.45: Miracle, Mystery or Philosophical Skepticism
The Vita Apollonii leaves much open to interpretation. In 4.45 Philostratus tells us about a young woman who was thought dead by her family and the whole of Rome. Apollonius whispers something in her ear and the maiden starts talking again. The narrator comments it was impossible for the bystanders and still is impossible for him to say whether the girl was really dead or not: whether it was a case of Scheintod which proved Apollonius’s extraordi…
Martyrs and Life-Writing in Late Antiquity
This chapter explores martyr accounts. Scholars traditionally divide these texts into two types: narrative representations of the suffering and death of martyrs (the so-called passiones ) on the one hand, and dramatic representations of the trial preceding this (the so-called acta or praxeis ), on the other. The exact semantic range of both labels is debated, but in any case the distinction does not capture the textual reality in its full complex…
Holy Men: Lives of Miracle Workers, Apostles, and Saints
This chapter assesses the special relationship between the ancient genre of biography and the religious phenomenon of holy men. Spiritual biographies are performative texts: there are many examples of characters who were established as holy men by the texts written about them. Some of these were totally invented by the authors, others lived in such a distant past or the information was so scarce or the intention of the authors were of such a natu…
Alfred Loisy's Comparative Method in Les mystères païens et le mystère chrétien
While the work of the "father of Roman Catholic Modernism" prior to his excommunication in 1908 has been extensively studied, Alfred Loisy's later career as professor of Histoire des Religions at the Collège de France has received less attention. This article examines his original contribution to comparative methodology for the interrelation between early Christianity and the pagan mystery cults. Loisy's explicit aim was to integrate the historic…
Writing Biography in Greece and Rome: Narrative Technique and Fictionalization
Ancient biography is now a well-established and popular field of study among classicists as well as many scholars of literature and history more generally. In particular biographies offer important insights into the dynamics underlying ancient performance of the self and social behaviour, issues currently of crucial importance in classical studies. They also raise complex issues of narrativity and fictionalization. This volume examines a range of…
A Marriage of Equals: Characterization in the passio Chrysanthi et Dariae
This article discusses the post-Nicene passio Chrysanthi et Dariae (BHL 1787-1787a-1788) and aims to demonstrate that this text gives evidence of more literary subtlety than the late antique passions usually get credit for. To underpin this claim, we analyze the characterization of the passion's protagonists Chrysanthus and Daria. The characterization reveals, we contend, how the passio takes different, ambiguous approaches to traditional gender …
The Saint as an Astute Heroine: Rhetoric and Characterization in the Passio Caeciliae
This article provides a detailed analysis of character construction in the fifth century passio Caeciliae ( Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina 1495 – 1495a – 1496). Our analysis sets out to challenge the general assumption that character construction in the late antique passions can correctly be described in terms of stereotypes. The passio Caeciliae appeals to and inverts reader expectations based upon traditional patterns in erotic narrative. We …
Violence against Christians and Violence by Christians in the First Three Centuries: Direct Violence, Cultural Violence and the Debate about Christian Exclusiveness
This contribution addresses the problem of violence by and violence against Christians in the first three centuries of the common era by using the definition of both direct and cultural violence as developed by Johan Galtung. Ancient religions offer examples of both and this paper argues that violence cannot always be explained by non-religious factors but is inherent to the traditions themselves. The ‘pax deorum’ mechanism identified the Christi…
Martyrdom, Literary Experiment and Church Politics in Jerome's Epistula Prima, to Innocentius, on the septies percussa
Jerome's Epistula prima is a remarkably hybrid text. It contains a miraculous account of the trial and failed execution of a woman from Vercelli, who is falsely accused of adultery and eventually saved from further persecution by Jerome's patron, Evagrius of Antioch. In our article we discuss the martyrological and novelistic elements of Jerome's text and analyze how he related a cruel, but trivial trial with anonymous protagonists to contemporar…
