Social Superego and the Republic: Ingeborg Maus on Kant’s Radical Theory of Democracy
This article aims to show that Ingeborg Maus’s interpretation of Kant’s political philosophy re-establishes Kant as a radical thinker of democracy in the canon of democratic theory, from which Cold War liberalism had excluded him. Using the concept ‘social superego’, Maus argues that trust in elitist authorities is foreign to Kant’s republican politics. In a comparison with Arthur Ripstein, it is shown why Maus rejects the right to resistance and…

Cosmopolitans as democratic underlabourers of the global? Cosmopolitanism and the challenges of postcolonialism
This article explores cosmopolitanism as an ‘underlabourer’ of the global. It argues that this is a specific type within the general classification of the democratic underlabourer in political theory. It aims to show that the intervention of intercultural learning processes is essential to the idea and history of cosmopolitanism. This study aims to propose a reading of cosmopolitanism as a programme for educating Europeans to see themselves as gl…
The democratic underlabourer: From the domestic to the international level
Much of political theory today is informed, explicitly or implicitly, by the model of the democratic underlabourer. This model combines a claim to know-how in the normative problems of politics with a commitment to political modesty. Democratic underlabourers seek to empower the public, not impose their own ‘wisdom’ on them. This self-understanding is difficult to maintain at the international level, given the lack of a democratic framework, ineq…
Indigene Bürgerschaft in ehemals koloniale…
The crisis of democracy and the “look downwards”
Current diagnoses of a crisis of democracy in the Global North go hand in hand with a disparaging “look downwards.” Already in the nineteenth century, liberal thinkers formulated institutional precautions against the “rabble.” What is striking about the current devaluation discourse is that the return of this “look downwards” is not limited to libertarian or liberal-conservative concepts but is also present in progressive approaches. We demonstra…

Kant on Race and Barbarism: Towards a More Complex View on Racism and Anti-Colonialism in Kant
Whether Kant’s late legal theory and his theory of race are contradictory in their account of colonialism has been a much-debated question that is also of highest importance for the evaluation of the Enlightenment’s contribution to Europe’s colonial expansion and the dispossession and enslavement of native and black peoples. This article discusses the problem by introducing the discourse on barbarism. This neglected discourse is the original and …
