New data on the morphological traits of neanderthal teeth from the Stajnia Cave (Poland)
Background: Neanderthal fossils are rare, and in Poland they have been found at only two sites: Ciemna Cave and Stajnia Cave. At Stajnia Cave, nine Neanderthal teeth associated with Micoquian artefacts and dated to ~120,000–92,500 years ago were discovered. Although their morphology and taxonomic status have been confirmed, the internal morphological variation of Neanderthal teeth remains poorly understood. Objective: The main aim of our study is…
High mountains, late palaeolithic hunting. The case of Hučivá Diera Cave in the Tatra Mts. (West Carpathians)
Application of Multi‐Method Dating for Understanding the Gravettian North of Moravia, Central Europe
This article presents the results of integrating three methods to assess the age of the Upper Palaeolithic site of Pietraszyn 11 (SW Poland), close to the Moravian Gate. Sediment chronology determined using optically stimulated luminescence produced promising, yet ambiguous results (51.0 ± 3.7 to 20.3 ± 0.7 ka). Molecular dating of rodent remains provided a more exact date (32–22.5 ka cal bp ). Radiocarbon dating, however, allowed us to narrow th…
Upper Palaeolithic Occupations in The Middle Dnister Valley
In 2019, new excavations were carried out at Doroshivtsi III site, dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. Ten identifiable archaeological levels belong to the Gravettian technocomplex. In the article, detailed data about the faunal remains is presented. The remains of reindeer, horses, mammoths, a wolf, a vulpine, and also a crow have been identified. According to the data, the main species for hunting were reindeer, then horses. In comparison with t…
Chronology and distribution of Central and Eastern European Pleistocene rhinoceroses (Perissodactyla, Rhinocerotidae) – A review
Biostratigraphic significance of the root vole (Alexandromys oeconomus) for dating late Middle and early Late Pleistocene (MIS 8-MIS 3) Neanderthal sites in southern Poland
Old site, new problems
New research at the Doroshivtsi site in Ukraine has provided data that allow fresh insights into a well-known and important Gravettian site in the Middle Dniester Valley
Hučivá Cave
This article discusses the objectives of the Stone Age Man in Caves of the Tatra Mountains project, which aims to explain the mysterious absence of evidence for the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains of Eastern Europe. We present preliminary work from Hučivá Cave, which demonstrates clear traces of Magdalenian settlement within this region

New hominin teeth from Stajnia Cave, Poland
The impact of major warming at 14.7 ka on environmental changes and activity of Final Palaeolithic hunters at a local scale (Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin, Western Carpathians, Poland
There is a widespread belief that the abrupt warming at 14.7 ka had a profound impact on the environment. However, the direct correlation between the global climatic event and changes in local environments is not obvious. We examined faunal succession in an intra-mountain basin of the Western Carpathians to assess the potential influence of the climatic change between Greenland Stadial-2a and Greenland Interstadial-1e on the local environment. We…
Impact of climate and humans on the range dynamics of the woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) in Europe during MIS 2
The woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) was widespread in almost all of Europe during the late Pleistocene. However, its distribution changed because of population fluctuations and range expansions and reductions. During Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2), these processes were highly dynamic. Our analyses of 318 radiocarbon dates from 162 localities, obtained directly from mammoth material, confirmed important changes in mammoth range bet…
