  • Checkerboard urbanization

    Open Access•R Vargas, David Hackett•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2025

Using digitized records from the U.S. General Land Office, we produce a time series map of land sales in early Chicago from 1810 to 1890. The graphic illuminates a checkerboard pattern of land sales adjacent to the Chicago River, which stemmed from a Congressional Act in 1827 funding the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Urban historians credit canal construction with positioning Chicago as a hub for global trade. Our graphic, based on historical geos…

  • Academic Copaganda

    Open Access•R Vargas, David Hackett et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 32

How does social science insulate police from social movements' demand for abolition? We explore this through a content analysis of policing social science research funded by Arnold Ventures, the MacArthur Foundation, and the National Institute of Justice published from 2011 to 2022 (N = 143 studies). Our mixed method content analysis revealed what we call "Academic Copaganda," or studies contesting social movement claims by authors (1) masking th…

  • Religion and American Culture

    David Hackett•BOOK•Religion and American Culture•2003

Religion and American Culture challenges the religion's traditional emphasis on older European, American, male, middle-class, Protestant, denomination, northeastern narratives concerned primarily with churches and theology. Breaking through the field with multicultural tales of Native American, African Americans and other groups that cut across boundaries of gender, class and religion and region, David Hackett's anthology offers an illuminating a…

  • Is Atlantic Canada Becoming More Dependent on Federal Transfers?' A Rejoinder

    David Hackett, D W Hackett et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1990•References: 1

The main focus of our original paper was to examine the relative rate of change in transfer dependence for Atlantic Canada for the period 1962-84. Transfer dependence was measured by the ratio of federal transfers made to a region to federal revenue raised within the same region, quoted as a proportion of the national average of this ratio. The national average ratio was set to 100, and for provinces and regions the number could be greater or les…

  • Is Atlantic Canada Becoming More Dependent on Federal Transfers

    David Hackett, D W Hackett et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1989•References: 2

This study undertakes an empirical analysis to examine the proposition that the Atlantic provinces have become increasingly dependent of federal transfer payments in recent years. A framework is developed within which the question of dependence of the Atlantic Provinces on transfer payments for the period 1962-84 is analyzed. The analysis indicates that per capita total federal transfers to the region increased at a faster rate than the national …
