  • Terrorism Today

    Christopher C Harmon•BOOK•Terrorism Today•2013

Drawing directly on the words and ideas of terrorists themselves, this book is an examination of patterns, current trends and future threats in terrorism world-wide. It explores the ideology and psychology, the politics and policies, the strategies and operations, of many active small groups and major insurgencies. The terrorist leader emerges as a calculating, innovated and often well-educated person whose use of violence against the innocent is…

  • Five Strategies of Terrorism

    Christopher C Harmon•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2001•Cited by: 9

Too often called 'mindless', terror groups are more often calculating. They set short term and longer aims related to power and political objectives, and then use terrorism - the calibration of fear - to advance those aims. Evident terrorist strategies are numerous, and often several are combined in particular campaigns or acts. Five of the leading strategies are discussed here: (1) creation of societal dislocation or chaos; (2) discrediting or d…

  • Illustrations of “learning” in counterinsurgency

    Christopher C Harmon•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Makers of strategy are not only responsible for prewar assessments, but must be responsive during war and capable of reassessing their enemy and their approach to the enemy. The record of French, British, and American counterinsurgency campaigns shows that this learning process can be aided by attention to lessons of past “small wars” and even to general principles of insurgency. Such distilled wisdom is difficult to apply to new situations, but …

  • Propaganda at pistol point

    Christopher C Harmon•ARTICLE•Political Communication•1992•Cited by: 2

The common tendency to speak and write of terrorists as “mindless,” and to either dismiss or dread them accordingly, is inappropriate. Many leftist extremists are deadly serious about their ideas. Most group leaders of the last three decades have been college‐educated at a minimum; many have professional backgrounds as teachers, college professors, writers, lawyers, and doctors. This sociopolitical reality suggests two questions for reflection: (…

  • Terrorism

    Christopher C Harmon•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•1992

If politics and military affairs often raise moral questions, terrorism is a politico‐military matter that veritably flings moral problems in our faces. This essay, initially prepared for military chaplains, explains why terrorism is a form of political depravity and a form of armed activity bearing little resemblance to legitimate guerrilla warfare. Dr Harmon analyzes how terrorists nonetheless use arguments ‐ moral and political ‐ to try to tra…
