  • Religious Fundamentalism, Right-Wing Authoritarianism and Prejudice

    Open Access•LINDA WYLIE, James J F Forest et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Prior research has not yielded a clear relationship between religious orientation and prejudice in spite of theoretical predictions. It was hypothesized that authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism would be positively associated with ethnic and racial prejudice, hostility towards homosexuals, and punitiveness in prison sentencing. Questionnaires measuring these variables and 12 demographic variables were mailed to 285 Manitoba voters, of wh…

  • Relationship of Role-Playing Games to Self-Reported Criminal Behaviour

    Open Access•SUZANNE ABYETA, James J F Forest et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

Fantasy role-playing games have been portrayed by the media and various social organizations as being linked to, and causing, socially maladaptive behaviour including criminality. Based on this social perception it was hypothesized that role-playing experience should be positively correlated with self-reported criminality. 20 experienced role-playing gamers and 25 nonplayers completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, a demographic questionn…

  • Memory for Information in Self-Help Psychology Books

    Open Access•A A Lubusko, Andrew Lubusko et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

Research on psychological self-help books has not demonstrated conclusively that improvements in mental health occur after people read the books. This study examined a more sensitive measure of change: how much information is retained when people read a self-help book. 107 men completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire in Session 1, read a self-help book during a 2-wk. interval, and completed an immediate or delayed 50-item true-false memory…

  • Personality Variables and Interest in Self-Help Books

    Open Access•ZALMAN SAFER, James J F Forest et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1987

122 subjects served in a study which examined whether neuroticism, introversion, and sex predicted interest in reading psychological self-help paperbacks. Subjects completed (a) a pretest questionnaire asking about types of self-help books, (b) the Eysenck Personality Inventory, (c) a chapter from a bestselling self-help book, and (d) an 11-item questionnaire about their interests in self-help books, therapy, and psychological problems. A princip…

  • Norms for the Personal Orientation Inventory Profile Sheet

    Open Access•George Sicz, James J F Forest et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Three review articles on the Personal Orientation Inventory suggest that the Profile Sheet for this test is based on the scores of entering college freshmen. Shostrom stated however that the Profile Sheet was based on the performance of a normal adult sample. An examination of the manual indicates that the reviewers are wrong; however, the group which appears to have served initially as the basis for the construction of the Profile Sheet is itsel…

  • Effects of Response Modes on Concept Identification

    Open Access•James J F Forest, James Forest et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

40 subjects solved three concept-identification problems under one of four treatment conditions. Purpose of the experiment was to determine how the response format used by subjects affected their performance. Subjects used one of four possible response modes: verbalize a single hypothesis when they thought they had the correct answer, verbalize a new hypothesis each time they decided to switch answers, classify each stimulus as positive or negati…
