  • Arctic 2.0

    Open Access•Patrick Lin, Fritz Allhoff•ARTICLE•Ethics & International Affairs•2019•Cited by: 1

Technology has an outsized impact on the modern world; it is how we have tamed our frontiers. But that role is largely ignored when it comes to the Arctic frontier. Emerging technologies, especially AI, can enable desperately needed services and infrastructure—but they can also challenge ethics, law, and policy, as they usually do. For instance, autonomous icebreaker ships pose a dual-use dilemma since they can be used for both humanitarian and m…

  • Empirical Objections to Torture

    Fritz Allhoff•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2014

Those who support torture in ticking-time-bomb cases are often criticized as failing to consider empirical objections to torture; however, torture's critics often wield this charge uncritically, doing little more than throwing out platitudes without considering the role of those platitudes in the dialectic. • Risk, Precaution, and Emerging Technologies

    Fritz Allhoff•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethics Law and…•2009•References: 2

This paper explores a framework for thinking about risks inherent in emerging technologies; given uncertainty about the magnitude or even nature of those risks, deliberation about those technologies is challenged. §1 develops a conceptual framework for risk, and §2 integrates that conception into cost-benefit analysis. Given uncertainty, we are often pushed toward precautionary approaches, and such approaches are explored in §3. These first three…
