Dark patterns and consumer vulnerability
Dark patterns that manipulate consumer behaviour are now a pervasive feature of digital markets. Depending on the choice architecture utilised, they can affect the perception, behaviour and purchasing patterns of online consumers. Using a novel empirical design, we find strong evidence that individuals across all groups are susceptible to dark patterns, and only weak evidence that user susceptibility is materially affected by commonly used genera…
Fiction and Solidarity: On the Representation of Mutual Support in U.S.-American Culture
Recent scholarship has conceptualized solidarity as a human right allowing individuals to protect themselves against social vulnerabilities. As with other human rights, the claims they imply need to be anchored in a sense of social cohesion—a common feeling of commitment and support, which ultimately has to be produced by cultural forms and institutions. This article examines how various types of mutual support have been imagined in the history o…

The Impact of Military Forts on Agricultural Investments on the Great Plains in 1880
The authors investigated empirically the relationship between agricultural development and proximity to military forts in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado in 1880. Agricultural investments were substantially higher in counties where a military fort was present, suggesting that military forts stimulated agricultural development on the Great Plains. However, the reverse was not true. The authors found no statistical support for the notion that forts …
Flexible enforcement and fine adjustment
This paper considers the level of, and changes in, optimal noncompliance penalties under the following conditions: (i) where the regulator responsible for setting policy parameters, such as a penalty, is different from (and thus may have a different objective from) the regulator responsible for enforcing existing regulations; and (ii) where enforcement behavior changes from one in which enforcers are unresponsive to overtures on the part of firms…
The Railroad's Impact on Land Values in the Upper Great Plains at the Closing of the Frontier
We show that the impact of transportation improvements on land values is complex with a direct, positive relationship on the price of land and also a positive relationship with the ratio of improved acres to total acres, another important influence on the per acre price of land. We construct a two step estimation that removes the impact of transportation outlets on the ratio of improved to total acres before including the transportation variables…
