“We don’t know how to do it without hurting people”
The implementation of equality policies in primary and secondary schools often follows a single-issue logic, addressing gender, sexuality, or cultural diversity in isolation. This article examines the tensions that emerge when LGBTIQ equality policies are implemented in culturally diverse educational settings in Catalonia (Spain). Drawing on 24 interviews with public officers and civil society professionals and a group discussion with 14 practiti…
From Legislative Mandates to Student Demands
Spain has undergone a significant normative shift; new laws on equality, coexistence, and university governance have expanded institutional responsibilities for promoting inclusion and preventing discrimination. This development reflects broader changes in the composition of the Spanish higher education student population and highlights the need for a more comprehensive, intersectional approach to inclusion, moving beyond the traditional focus on…
I don't want to be the Muslim lesbian idol
This paper explores how four queer women from Muslim backgrounds in Catalonia navigate the intersections of gender, sexuality, and faith, challenging dominant narratives that position Muslim backgrounds and queerness as inherently incompatible. Based on in-depth interviews and using an inductive approach, the study identifies five recurring “knots” in their experiences: self-identification, spiritual exploration, family expectations, cultural dis…
Youth dis/comforts in everyday spaces
Intersectional perspectives on the configuration and effects of discrimination and inequality on youth are currently a growing focus of research. Here we present a study on the spatialities of perceived discrimination among 88 young people (aged 14–16 years old) in Catalonia through a methodological approach that combines and integrates quantitative and qualitative data on intersectional dynamics. By analysing the dis/comforts caused by diverse a…
Tweeting from fear
The research addresses how gender violence against feminists on Twitter during COVID-19 is produced. Mainly focused in the Catalan cultural context, 462,281 attacks on Twitter were analysed, using virtual ethnography and content analysis. We also conducted semi-structured interviews with key agents. This enabled to (1) analyse the profiles of feminists subjected to attacks and those who attack them, (2) identify the characteristics of this violen…
Doing, being and verbalizing
The hegemonic narrative in the West establishes that having same-sex relationships constitutes an identity that must be public. This article analyses how this narrative is reproduced and/or subverted in the discourses of queer migrant people from Muslim backgrounds in Catalonia (Spain). The analysis of 10 interviews reveals a more fluid notion of sexual orientation, an uncomfortableness with the identity categories regarding sexuality, and a stro…
The Incorporation of Cultural and Religious Diversity in LGBT Policies
This article reflects on the biases in sexual and gender diversity policies in relation to the axis of cultural and religious diversity in Catalonia (Spain), where these policies have experienced an enormous boost since 2014. The paper aims to analyse the articulation between the experiences of queer migrants from Muslim backgrounds living in Catalonia and the LGBT and intercultural policies. Based on interviews both with queer migrants and peopl…
Demonopolisation and dislocation
The aim of this paper is to analyse the reformulation of the place and role of religion in Spanish public institutions after the constitutional disestablishment of the Catholic Church and religious diversification of society. Drawing upon qualitative fieldwork in six Spanish prisons, we argue that there is a process of the realignment of forces between the religious groups that provide services in such institutions, the Catholic Church adopting a…
Politics and religion beyond state borders
This study examines the interplay between the political and religious factors in the activity of Spanish members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in their work within the European Parliament (EP). First, we explore the impact of Spanish MEPs’ religious preferences and ideological beliefs regarding religious affairs on their parliamentary activity. Second, we analyse the parliamentary activity of Spanish MEPs (parliamentary questions and motions …
Narrating Liberal Rights and Culture
Drawing on cultural sociology approaches to the role of narrative and framing in politics, this article explores urban contestations over Muslim face veiling in Spain. We argue that regimes of religious diversity are shaped by the ways that the framing and narrating of rights and culture acquire cultural resonance and political traction in urban society. We find that the meanings attached to the face veil and mobilised in public discourses draw o…
