“Really, he dased the doll to the girl?” Two-year-olds can exploit grammatical and thematic content to learn novel verb meanings
Infants exploit the syntactic context verbs appear in to guide verb learning: a mechanism known as syntactic bootstrapping . However, it remains unclear whether infants' bootstrapping representations are achieved by matching the number of nouns in a sentence to the number of participants in an event, or by exploiting a more specific mapping between syntactic positions and thematic roles. To investigate this, we tested toddlers' ability to learn t…
The observation of superiority on multiple movements to the Italian left-periphery: Intervention effects on nested dependencies and the role of information-structure features
Young Romance speakers can structure their sentences by dislocating multiple constituents to the left periphery, resulting in non-canonical word orders. Production data, however, show that this ordering is rigid: only SOV sequences are attested, an observation reminiscent of Superiority. The first goal of the paper is to replicate this observation in comprehension; the second is to derive the Subject-over-Object pattern in terms of Intervention, …
Relevance without existence: Experimenting on blind implicatures with empty domains
The present paper presents experimental evidence confirming that contextually mismatching scalar implicatures can be generated even when quantifiers range over empty domains. In the literature, this possibility has been interpreted as providing further evidence for a grammatical approach to scalar implicatures. The main result presented here is that scalar sentences with empty domains are judged as more infelicitous when associated with a mismatc…
Morphosyntactic weaknesses in Developmental Language Disorder: The role of structure and agreement configurations
Agreement is a morphosyntactic dependency which is sensitive to the hierarchical structure of the clause and is constrained by the structural distance that separates the elements involved in this relation. In this paper we present two experiments, providing new evidence that Italian-speaking children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), as well as Typically Developing (TD) children, are sensitive to the same hierarchical and locality facto…
Strong and Weak Readings in the Domain of Worlds: A Negative Polar Modal and Children's Scope Assignment
Children's on-line processing of epistemic modals
In this paper we investigated the real-time processing of epistemic modals in five-year-olds. In a simple reasoning scenario, we monitored children's eye-movements while processing a sentence with modal expressions of different force ( might/must ). Children were also asked to judge the truth-value of the target sentences at the end of the reasoning task. Consistent with previous findings (Noveck, 2001), we found that children's behavioural respo…
Born in the USA: A Comparison of Modals and Nominal Quantifiers in Child Language
One of the challenges confronted by language learners is to master the interpretation of sentences with multiple logical operators (e.g., nominal quantifiers, modals, negation), where different interpretations depend on different scope assignments. Five-year-old children have been found to access some readings of potentially ambiguous sentences much less than adults do (Lidz and Musolino, Lang Acquis 13(2):73–102, 2006; Musolino, Universal Gramma…
