Learning to express causal events in Mandarin Chinese: A multimodal perspective
Previous research has shown language-specific features play a guiding role in how children develop expression of events with speech and gestures. This study adopts a multimodal approach and examines Mandarin Chinese, a language that features context use and verb serializations. Forty children (four-to-seven years old) and ten adults were asked to describe fourteen video stimuli depicting different types of causal events involving location/state c…
The impact of Covid-19 on communicative accessibility and well-being in adults with hearing impairment: A survey study
This study shows the detrimental effect of COVID-19 measures on the communicative accessibility of individuals with hearing loss. It also shows their resilience as only partial group differences were found on well-being. Protective factors are indicated, such as access to information and audiological care
Perspectives of D/HH-Students on Mainstream Higher Education: A Qualitative Study
Social, contextual, and technological changes affected the educational context for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) in higher education in many countries. Although, several barriers to academic success already have been identified, the perspectives of D/HH-students on inclusion, educational facilities, and support are important to overcome them. This interview-based qualitative study describes the perspectives of 32 D/HH-students i…
Theoretical implications of children's early production of Romanian Accusative clitics
The development of oral language in children with bilateral hearing loss: From speech perception to morphosyntax
The production of Dutch finite verb morphology: A comparison between hearing-impaired CI children and specific language impaired children
Can speech pitch perception be measured language-independently
Recently, a test battery was developed with the goal of assessing perception of F 0 in linguistic, but language-independent, contexts by listeners from different language backgrounds. Test validation using Dutch, Italian and Romanian listeners generally showed comparable performance. In this study we present cross-language results on how F 0 contributes to prominence perception in Dutch (a Germanic language) and Italian and Romanian (Romance lang…
From NP to DP: Volume 2: The expression of possession in noun phrases
This is the second of a two-volume selection of refereed and revised papers, originally presented at the special workshop of the international conference From NP to DP at the University of Antwerp. Reflecting the stage of current research with respect to the expression of possession in the noun phrase, it focusses on issues such as alienable and inalienable possession, internal and external syntax of possessors, interaction between determiners an…
From NP to DP: Volume 1: The syntax and semantics of noun phrases
This is the first of a two-volume selection of refereed and revised papers, originally presented at the international conference From NP to DP at the University of Antwerp. The papers address issues in the syntax and semantics of the noun phrase, in particular the so-called DP-hypothesis which takes noun phrases to be headed by a functional head D(eterminer). The major concerns can be grouped around 3 subthemes: the internal syntax of noun phrase…
