  • Examining rural health equity and impact through the translational science benefits model

Open Access•Maggie Padek, Rebecca Butcher et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Rural communities often lack access to healthcare, have limited resources and infrastructure, and may experience suboptimal translation of evidence-based interventions into practice or measurement of translational research impact. The Consortium of Rural States (CORES), comprising eight Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hubs, is a research consortium that focuses on clinical and translational research impacting rural h…

  • Reference frames in language and cognition

Jürgen Bohnemeyer, Eve Danziger et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2022

Numerous studies have found evidence of a speech community’s referential practices in discourse being predictive of its members’ behavior in nonverbal tasks. In this article, we discuss a series of exceptions to this alignment pattern, drawing on data from eleven populations of Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America, and Oceania. These exceptions have not been discussed in conjunction with one another and the striking commonalit…

  • Semantic typology

Randi Moore, Katharine Donelson et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2015

This article presents an overview of the goals and methods of semantic typology, the study of the distribution of semantic categories across languages. Results from this field inform theoretical accounts of syntax-semantics interface phenomena, as well as the nature of the relationship between language and cognition. This article discusses a variety of quantitative methods that represent recent efforts in semantic typology to (i) discover pattern…

  • The Contact Diffusion of Linguistic Practices

Jürgen Bohnemeyer, Katharine Donelson et al.•ARTICLE•Language Dynamics and Change•2015

We examine the extent to which practices of language use may be diffused through language contact and areally shared, using data on spatial reference frame use by speakers of eight indigenous languages from in and around the Mesoamerican linguistic area and three varieties of Spanish. Regression models show that the frequency of L 2-Spanish use by speakers of the indigenous languages predicts the use of relative reference frames in the L 1 even w…

  • Prosodic Markers of Saliency in Humorous Narratives

Lucy Pickering, Marcella Corduas et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2009•Citada por: 2•Referências: 41

Much of what we think we know about the performance of humor relies on our intuitions about prosody (e.g., “it's all about timing”); however, this has never been empirically tested. Thus, the central question addressed in this article is whether speakers mark punch lines in jokes prosodically and, if so, how. To answer this question, this article unites both the recently emerged research agenda grounding spoken discourse analysis in the precision…
