Inhabiting Two Places at the Same Time: Layers of Isolation in Chiloé, Southern Chile
Much has been said about the recent socioeconomic transformations in the Chiloé archipelago in southern Chile, with particular focus on the ongoing neoliberal industrialization. Life in the more remote and rural areas of the archipelago has evolved differently compared to the Isla Grande of Chiloé, where towns are expanding, and an urban consumer culture has emerged. This paper draws on extensive ethnographic research conducted in two distinct ar…
When I Grow Up, I Want to Peel Potatoes: Learning and Living in Apiao, Chiloé, Chile
This article discusses how Apiao children make sense of their natural and social world in an insular indigenous community, delving into the values of obedience, appreciation and independence. It explores children's strong engagement with the natural environment, the tasks required of them and the skills necessary to perform these. Learning and living in Apiao imply an intersubjective commitment to the local environment, which moulds the islanders…
Helpless: Reflections on grief and sociality in three Amerindian societies
In this article, we reflect on one of Peter Gow’s key pieces of work, “Helpless,” tracing how his scholarship has informed and influenced our own work, from our experiences in the field to our approaches to analysis. We explore some of the main themes from this piece of writing, including how intersubjectivity is produced by creating relations of mutual dependence—a precondition for sociality. Helplessness is a characteristic of newborn babies as…

Theorizing Relations in Indigenous South America
Once conceptualized as self-evident connections between discrete social units systematized through ethnographic fieldwork, relations are being increasingly treated as instantiations of local ontological theories. The ethnography of indigenous South America has provided a source of inspiration for this analytical shift. As manifested in the contributions to this special issue, at the core of indigenous practices and discourses on relations lies a …
Ritualizing the Everyday
Based on an analysis of ethnographic data collected in Apiao, Chiloé, this article offers a view of relations as inescapably fraught connections between different entities. These relations are articulated in highly ritualized hospitality practices involving reciprocal exchange of food and drinks in a domestic space. Cutting across established, contrasting analytical categories, such as consanguines/affines and friends/ enemies, hospitality practi…

Stepping between different worlds: Reflections before, during and after fieldwork
Before beginning fieldwork, the anthropology student pictures herself in a totally different dimension: an 'indigenous' world in which she will be immersed for the whole fieldwork period: she does not know the native language, she has no idea of who she will meet or where she will spend most of her time. Then, the 'limbo' state ends and she finds herself suddenly active, even when she does nothing. To be doing fieldwork means to be constantly obs…
