  • Vowel-Rhotic Metathesis in Guarayu

Megan J Crowhurst, Megan Crowhurst et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Guarayu (Tupí-Guaraní, Bolivia) has undergone a diachronic process of metathesis in which a word-final tap /ɾ/ exchanged positions with a preceding high nonfront vowel /ɨ/ or /u/. We propose a scenario for how such an exchange could occur, using Guarayu as a case study. A tap/vowel metathesis is presented as a timing readjustment that led to an exchange of phonemic status between a phonemic vowel on one side of the tap and an automatic intrusive …

    Open Access•Megan J Crowhurst, Megan Crowhurst•ARTICLE•LIAMES Línguas Indígenas Americanas•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 20

  • Comparative markedness and identity effects in reduplication

    Megan J Crowhurst, Megan Crowhurst•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2003

In “Comparative Markedness” (henceforth CM), McCarthy (this volume) proposes that the markedness family of constraints should be divided into parallel sets of constraints distinguishing ‘old’ and ‘new’ violations. Whether a markedness violation is ‘old’ or ‘new’ is determined by comparing the candidate under evaluation with a ‘fully faithful candidate’ (FFC), defined in reference to a relation of correspondence. (In the case of input-output, or I…
