  • The Copy Theory of Control and the Analysis of Finite Control

Open Access•M Rita Manzini, Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Languages•2026

Under the Markovian property of derivations the history of the derivation is not preserved in the current state, hence chains cannot be read off it. Instead, a Copy relation applies between identical inscriptions at the phase level, before Transfer. Consequently, Copy can take place between two identical theta-marked arguments, each separately introduced by External Merge, yielding control. In this article, we apply the Copy Theory of Control (CT…

  • A new look at an old question

M Rita Manzini, Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2025

Balkan languages show control (bound reading) of the embedded subject in finite contexts, unlike Romance and English which require a non-finite. These finite clauses are introduced by the so-called subjunctive particle ( prt ), namely tə in Arbëresh ( të in Albanian standard orthography). Finite control of this kind has long been a problem for generative grammar accounts. Many analyses have followed an Anglocentric approach, assimilating finite c…

  • A Balkan View on the Left Periphery

    Open Access•Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•Referências: 32

The present paper discusses two sets of so-called particles in the Balkan languages, arguing that the correspondences attested in the E-languages reveal abstract properties at the level of the I-language. The first set involves modal particles which participate in the analytic expressions of the "future" and the "subjunctive". Future markers are construed as V-related elements externalizing a scope position of the verb, while the subjunctive mark…

  • Middle-passive voice in Albanian and Greek

Open Access•M Rita Manzini, Anna Roussou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2015•Citada por: 7•Referências: 8

In this paper we consider middle-passive voice in Greek and Albanian, which shows a many-to-many mapping between LF and PF. Different morphosyntactic shapes (conditioned by tense or aspect) are compatible with the same set of interpretations, which include the passive, the reflexive, the anticausative, and the impersonal (in Albanian only). Conversely, each of these interpretations can be encoded by any of the available morphosyntactic structures…

  • Reconsidering the 'Modal Particles' in Modern Greek

    Open Access•Anastasios Tsangalidis, Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Journal of Greek Linguistics•2010•Citada por: 6•Referências: 6

In the present paper we consider the elements na, a and as, which combine with the finite verb and give rise to a variety of modal readings, such as future, subjunctive, etc. On the basis of their distributional similarities and differences, we argue that the elements under consideration are situated in the left periphery and fall into two categories: a and as have a verbal property, while na has a locative one which also underlies its deictic …

  • On Greek VSO again

    Open Access•Anna Roussou, Ianthi-Maria Tsimpli•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2006•Citada por: 8•Referências: 8

In the present paper we provide an account of VSO in Greek and its (relative) absence in Italian, despite the fact that both languages allow for postverbal subjects. We argue that this parametric difference reduces to different lexicalisation options regarding the D-system of the two grammars. We assume that the clause structure divides into three basic domains (V, T, and C), and that nominal (clitic) positions are available in each of these doma…

  • Syntactic Change

    Open Access•Ian Roberts, Anna Roussou•BOOK•Syntactic Change•2003

The phenomenon of grammaticalization - the historical process whereby new grammatical material is created - has attracted a great deal of attention within linguistics. This is an attempt to provide a general account of this phenomenon in terms of a formal theory of syntax. Using Chomsky's Minimalist Program for linguistic theory, Roberts and Roussou show how this approach gives rise to a number of important conceptual and theoretical issues conce…

  • On the left periphery

    Open Access•Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Journal of Greek Linguistics•2000•Citada por: 32•Referências: 1

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to provide a unified account of the particles þa, na and as in Greek, and second, to refine the articulated CP structure of Rizzi (1997). To this end, it is argued that þa, na, and as occupy the lower C head, which is specified for modality. The particles na and as further raise to a higher C head (partly similar to Rizzi’s Force), thus differing from þa. The distribution of topic and focus in relation…

  • "A formal approach to "grammaticalization

    Open Access•Ian Roberts, Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1999•Citada por: 11

This paper presents an approach to the well-known diachronic phenomenon of grammaticalization in terms of a modified version of Chomsky's (1995: chapter 4) minimalist approach to syntax, combined with the general approach to language change outlined in Clark and Roberts (1993). The central idea that we follow is that grammaticalization involves the reanalysis of lexical material as functional material. We argue that the reason this kind of change…

  • Negation and polarity items in Modern Greek

    Ianthi-Maria Tsimpli, Anna Roussou•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•1996

Cet article traite des proprietes syntaxiques et semantiques des items de polarite en grec moderne afin de presenter les conditions d'autorisation dans leur distribution, et leurs possibilites d'interpretation dans differents contextes syntaxiques. Les As. montrent que les items de polarite sont des elements quantificationnels dont la lecture universelle ou existentielle depend de la tete fonctionnelle qui les autorise et de leur specification de…
