Shared Decision Making Interventions for Parents of Children on the Autism Spectrum
Parents of children on the autism spectrum face challenging treatment-related decisions, often with limited knowledge about available options. Shared Decision Making (SDM), a process where clinicians, patients, and families collaborate to make decisions based on evidence and preferences, can assist parents in navigating these choices. However, little is known about the use of SDM interventions for autism-related parental decisions. A systematic a…
Racial, Ethnic, and Sex Differences in Methadone-Involved Overdose Deaths Before and After the US Federal Policy Change Expanding Take-home Methadone Doses
In this interrupted time series study of monthly methadone-involved overdose deaths, the take-home policy may have helped reduce deaths for Black and Hispanic men but had no association with deaths of Black or Hispanic women or White men or women
A National Opioid Tax for Treatment Programs in the US
Two million people have an opioid use disorder (OUD) in the US, 1 putting local and state governments in desperate need of treatment funds. Five states-Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, New York, and Rhode Island-recently enacted opioid excise taxes or fees to generate revenue and curtail excessive opioid prescribing (Table )
Making Progress Monitoring Easier and More Motivating
Data collection is an important component of evidence-based behavioral interventions for children with autism, but many one-to-one aides (i.e., behavioral support staff) do not systemically collect quantitative data that are necessary for best-practice client progress monitoring. Data collection of clients’ behaviors often involves labor-intensive pen-and-paper practices. In addition, the solitary nature of one-to-one work limits opportunities fo…
Behavioral health service use post‐jail release and reduced risk of return to jail
This study examined whether behavioral health service use post‐jail release was associated with reduced risk of jail reincarceration. The study sample included 20,615 individuals who had behavioral health diagnoses and were released from the Philadelphia County jail. Using administrative records of the county jail and state‐, county‐, and Medicaid‐funded behavioral health service use from 2010 to 2018, we conducted Cox proportional hazard analyse…
Disrupted Care Continuity
Children with autism situated in lower income families often receive intensive educational interventions as their primary form of treatment, due to financial barriers for community interventions. However, the continuity of care can be disrupted by school transitions. The quality of social relationships during the transition to a new school among parents, school staff and community providers, called the team-around-the-child (TAC), can potentially…
Psychiatric Diagnoses and Treatment Preceding Schizophrenia in Adolescents Aged 9–17 Years
Careful screening and evaluation to validate diagnoses is important as the presence of certain psychiatric morbidity is common among adolescents with schizophrenia during the prodromal period. Developing acceptable and accessible interventions that will reduce psychiatric hospitalization and residential treatment care and improve care connection for schizophrenia treatment is important to mitigate complexity in treatment for adolescents and reduc…

Community–academic partnerships in implementation research
Community–academic partnerships(CAPs) are a critical component of implementing and sustaining evidence‐based practices (EBPs) in community settings; however, the approaches used and mechanisms of change within CAPs have not been rigorously studied. The first step to advancing the science of CAP is to operationally define and contextualize the approaches used in CAP as part of the implementation process. Our research group has gleaned valuable les…
The Differential Effects of Insurance Mandates on Health Care Spending for Children’s Autism Spectrum Disorder
OBJECTIVES: There is substantial variation in treatment intensity among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study asks whether policies that target health care utilization for ASD affect children differentially based on this variation. Specifically, we examine the impact of state-level insurance mandates that require commercial insurers to cover certain treatments for ASD for any fully-insured plan. METHODS: Using insurance claims …
Influence of Community-Level Cultural Beliefs about Autism on Families' and Professionals' Care for Children
This qualitative study aimed to understand how community-level cultural beliefs affect families' and professionals' care for children with autism and developmental delays in immigrant communities, as a first step towards promoting early identification and access to early intervention services. The study was part of the larger New York City (NYC) Korean Community Autism Project, which was designed to identify strategies to increase awareness of au…

The Effects of Medicaid Home and Community-based Services Waivers on Unmet Needs Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder
BACKGROUND: Several states have passed Medicaid Home and Community-based Services (HCBS) waivers that expand eligibility criteria and available services for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous research has shown considerable variation in these waivers, but little is known about the extent to which they address the health care needs of children with ASD. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of Medicaid HCBS waivers, and their cha…
Field Instructors Extending EBP Learning in Dyads (Field)
Objective: The act of moving, tailoring, and sustaining evidence-based practices (EBP) into real world settings has proven formidable. Schools of social work are responsible for preparing students to deliver EBP interventions while trying to engender the practice of routinely using evidence for decision making. Given the difficulty of accomplishing these objectives and cognizant that field education is the heart of the experiential component of g…
Costs of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the United Kingdom and the United States
IMPORTANCE: The economic effect of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) on individuals with the disorder, their families, and society as a whole is poorly understood and has not been updated in light of recent findings. OBJECTIVE: To update estimates of age-specific, direct, indirect, and lifetime societal economic costs, including new findings on indirect costs, such as individual and parental productivity costs, associated with ASDs. DESIGN, SETTIN…
A Challenging Fit
Studies of families with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have documented substantial concerns at the intersection of work and family life. Using a phenomenological study design with intensive interview and survey data from parents of 37 children with ASD diagnoses, the authors explore families’ experiences prior to, during, and soon after their child's ASD diagnosis. Drawing from parents’ narratives, the authors identify and discuss …

Explaining Low Rates of Autism Among Hispanic Schoolchildren in Texas
In data from the Texas Educational Agency and the Health Resources and Services Administration, we found fewer autism diagnoses in school districts with higher percentages of Hispanic children. Our results are consistent with previous reports of autism rates 2 to 3 times as high among non-Hispanic Whites as among Hispanics. Socioeconomic factors failed to explain lower autism prevalence among Hispanic schoolchildren in Texas. These findings raise…

Racial/Ethnic Disparities in the Identification of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders
Objectives. We sought to examine racial and ethnic disparities in the recognition of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Methods. Within a multisite network, 2568 children aged 8 years were identified as meeting surveillance criteria for ASD through abstraction of evaluation records from multiple sources. Through logistic regression with random effects for site, we estimated the association between race/ethnicity and documented ASD, adjusting for g…
Predictors of residential placement following a psychiatric crisis episode among children and youth in state custody
This study examined the extent and correlates of entry into residential care among 603 children and youth in state custody who were referred to psychiatric crisis services. Overall, 27% of the sample was placed in residential care within 12 months after their 1st psychiatric crisis screening. Among the children and youth placed in residential care, 51% were so placed within 3 months of their 1st crisis screening, with an additional 22% placed bet…

Placement Stability and Mental Health Costs for Children in Foster Care
Objective. Although prior population-based studies have found that children in foster care use more mental health services than their Medicaid peers, less is known about how different experiences in foster care impact the likelihood of mental health service use. The primary aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that instability of foster care placements is associated with higher costs for mental health care services. The secondary aim is to…
