  • Doublets in Hebrew adjective and noun formation

    Open Access•Lior Laks•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2024

The study examines the criteria that are responsible for competition in noun and adjective formation in Hebrew. I compare two cases where words receive an additional form with no change in meaning. I account for such changes, arguing that they target morphological and semantic transparency between related words and a morphological distinction between lexical categories. Adjectives ending with - an exhibit variation through - i suffixation ( dayka…

  • Semantic transparency and doublet formation

    Open Access•Lior Laks•ARTICLE•Morphology•2024•Referencias: 60

This study examines the correlation between derivational paradigms and morphological variation and change. I will examine a case study of Hebrew location nouns formation. Semitic morphology relies highly on non-concatenative morphology, where words are formed in patterns. Some Hebrew location nouns that are formed in one pattern, receive an additional form in another pattern with no change of their meaning. In contrast, there are location nouns, …

  • The phonetics of Modern Hebrew rhotics

Evan-Gary Cohen, Lior Laks et al.•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2019

This paper investigates manner variation of Israeli Hebrew rhotics with respect to two factors: prosodic position and speaker gender. An acoustic experimental study shows that although the Hebrew rhotic phoneme tends to be a dorsal approximant, it is significantly more likely to undergo fortition in onset position. This fortition is a result of target overshoot, the rhotic subsequently being produced with a greater degree of constriction than tha…

  • Verb innovation in Hebrew and Palestinian Arabic

    Lior Laks•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2018

This study investigates the criteria for form selection in the formation of new verbs in Modern Hebrew and Palestinian Arabic. The verbal systems of these languages consist of templatic forms ( binyanim , sg. binyan ), where every verb that enters the language must conform to one of them. Some binyanim are not used at all for the formation of new verbs, while others are used quite rarely. The paper is based on productions of new verbs that have b…
