  • Noam Chomsky and the Soviet Linguistics in the 1970s – 1980s

    Yakov G Testelets•ARTICLE•RSUH/RGGU Bulletin Literary…•2025

The author outlines the reception of Noam Chomsky’s philosophy of language and his theoretical linguistic models, in Soviet linguistics of the 1970s–1980s. Authors who in the 1960s were fascinated by Chomsky’s transformational model and used formal methods of studying language (the ‘formalists’) by that time lost interest in his works, because the generative semantics project led by George Lakoff, James McCawley and others, and later Igor Mel’čuk…

  • The role languages of the North Caucasus

    Open Access•Yakov G Testelets•ARTICLE•Rhema•2021

In the paper, we present new material to evaluate the theoretical assumptions and basic claims of the idea of “role languages” which was put forward in the linguistic typology about 1980 by William Foley, Robert Van Valin and Aleksandr E. Kibrik. Our point of special interest are the languages of the East and West Caucasian families, including the East Caucasian languages of Dagestan which Kibrik claimed to belong to the role type. Role languages…

  • Differential nominal marking in Circassian

    Peter M Arkadiev, Yakov G Testelets•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2019

In this paper we describe a peculiar pattern of case alternation from the polysynthetic Circassian (West Caucasian) languages, where specificity-driven differential marking of noun phrases is attested in all syntactic positions and with the absolutive and the oblique cases alike. We call this phenomenon differential nominal marking (DNM). We show that the presenсe resp. absenсe of overt case marking in Circassian fits in the two-level (DP vs. NP)…
