A multidimensional perspective on the acquisition of subject-verb dependencies by Haitian-Creole speaking children
The present multidimensional study investigates the acquisition of pronominal subject-verb dependencies in Standard Haitian Creole (HC). A corpus analysis confirms that HC subject pronouns are phonological clitics in the target grammar and that their reduction is optional and unpredictable. The comprehension and production of dependencies involving these subject pronouns in 20 preschoolers acquiring HC as their first language were investigated. W…
Converging Evidence of Underlying Competence
A surprising comprehension-production asymmetry in subject-verb (SV) agreement acquisition has been suggested in the literature, and recent research indicates that task-specific as well as language-specific features may contribute to this apparent asymmetry across languages. The present study investigates when during development children acquiring Mexican Spanish gain competence with 3 rd -person SV agreement, testing production as well as compre…
Uncovering productive morphosyntax in French-learning toddlers
The present study applies a multidimensional methodological approach to the study of the acquisition of morphosyntax. It focuses on evaluating the degree of productivity of an infrequent subject–verb agreement pattern in the early acquisition of French and considers the explanatory role played by factors such as input frequency, semantic transparency of the agreement markers, and perceptual factors in accounting for comprehension of agreement in …
Is children's comprehension of subject-verb agreement universally late? Comparative evidence from French, English, and Spanish
The influence of typology and modality on the acquisition of verb agreement morphology in British Sign Language
The development of morphological verb agreement in childrenís language involves several different linguistic phenomena. Languageñspecific influences impact on developmental patterns and age of acquisition. This study addresses three potential factors involved in the development of verb agreement morphology in sign languages and more specifically in a case study of one deaf child of native signing parents acquiring British Sign Language. The data …
On the overgeneralization of the Intransitive/Transitive alternation in children's speech
This study investigates the cross-linguistic patterns of the overgeneralization of the Intransitive/ Transitive alternations found in children's speech and provides new evidence from findings based on the acquisition of French. The morphosyntactic characterization of such phenomenon in English and Hebrew child language is followed by a description of the morphosyntactic characterization of such alternation in adult French which relies on an accou…
