A Unified Morphosyntactic Analysis of Reduplication as Inclusion
This paper proposes a unified analysis of reduplication as the lexical spell-out of a relational part–whole/inclusion predicate (⊆) in morphosyntax. Adopting the framework of Manzini and colleagues, we argue that reduplicative morphology—across diverse languages and domains—encodes a subset relation, whereby an event, individual, or property is interpreted as included in a larger set or continuum of similar instances. We bring evidence from a ran…
Agreement features in the nominal domain as classifiers
Number and gender features are often assumed to differ in agreement processing, yet psycholinguistic evidence does not consistently support this distinction. This paper examines optional agreement in complex NPs (e.g., Italian Un centinaio di senatori si è dimesso / si sono dimessi , “A hundred senators has/have resigned”), where verbs may agree with either the singular head noun or the plural embedded noun. We argue that number and gender operat…
On the interpretation of inflected subject clitics
This paper discusses the distribution of subject clitics in nominal copular constructions in the variety of Este (PD) which is a partial pro-drop language where null subjects alternate with subject proclitics: when a postverbal subject NP is present, no subject clitic is allowed with lexical verbs. However, subject proclitics are allowed with postverbal subjects in inverse copular sentences where the postverbal NP agrees with both the copula and …
Derivational Relators in Italian
The present paper addresses the categorial content of affixes forming a set of denominal adjectives in Italian, arguing that they are substantially the derivational counterpart of oblique case/adpositions. Specifically, we argue that they act as elementary relators, following Manzini and Franco, who characterized oblique cases and prepositions as general relators expressing the relations is-included (⊆)/includes (⊇), or, in other words, their con…
