The status of argument ellipsis as NP ellipsis or DP ellipsis
Landau (2023a. Argument ellipsis as external merge after transfer. Natural Language and Linguistic Theory 41(2). 793–845) argues against Tomioka (2003. The semantics of Japanese null pronouns and its cross-linguistic implications. In Kerstin Schwabe & Susanne Winkler (eds.), The interfaces: Deriving and interpreting omitted structures , 321–339. Amsterdam: John Benjamins) and Bošković (2018. On pronouns, clitic doubling, and argument ellipsis: Ar…
Bottom Copy Pronunciation in Japanese Passives
On the basis of Abe's (2016) proposal that in the case of an A‐chain, any member can be the target for pronunciation, I argue that Japanese passives may have the bottom copies of the produced A‐chains pronounced. When the passivized subjects appear to occupy their original θ‐positions, it is standardly claimed that the relevant word order is derived by scrambling other material sentence‐initially. Contrary to this claim, I demonstrate that there …
How to apply multiple scrambling in Japanese
In this paper, I argue that the phenomena of multiple scrambling in Japanese are best captured by assuming different derivations, depending on whether they involve long-distance or clause-internal scrambling. I argue that long-distance multiple scrambling involves remnant VP scrambling, on the assumption that long-distance scrambling necessarily produces a focus chain, which thus prohibits separate applications of scrambling in multiple scramblin…

Focus Licensing at the Left Periphery in Japanese Right Dislocation
In this paper, I argue that there is a designated focus position in theCPlayer in Japanese and that this position is activated only in limited contexts, such as ellipsis contexts. I argue that in fact one of the best cases for such a designated focus position involves Japanese right dislocation. Assuming the biclausal analysis of this construction, which involves ellipsis, I argue that the postverbal phrase occupies the position in theCPlayer des…
Late Merge and Phases for Anti-C-Command Requirements
In this article, I propose a unified explanation for the argument-adjunct asymmetries that have been observed regarding two seemingly unrelated anti-c-command requirements: (i) condition C and (ii) the anti-c-command requirement on argument ellipsis, observed in Abefor null arguments in Japanese. I argue that these asymmetries are best explained by the mechanism of late merge of adjuncts proposed by Lebeaux () with a derivational definition of c-…

Dynamic antisymmetry for labeling
Make Short Answers Shorter
The standard approach for short answers is the one, like Merchant's (2004), in which the remnant phrase undergoes focus movement to a peripheral position before deletion takes place. In this article, I argue against this approach, supporting instead what we may call the in situ approach to short answers, according to which the remnant phrase does not undergo focus movement to a peripheral position but rather simply stays in its original position.…

A generalized rightward movement analysis of Antecedent Contained Deletion
In this paper, we will argue that the LF Object Shift analysis of the infinite regress resolution of Antecedent Contained Deletion is untenable conceptually and empirically. Generalizing Baltin's (1987) CP Extraposition analysis, we will instead propose that any type of rightward movement, including NP and PP Rightward Shift, is available for the infinite regress resolution. Furthermore, we will show that our generalized rightward movement analys…
