The domain of pronouns and backward binding
This study examines the relationships between personal pronouns and their nominal antecedents, focusing on the phenomenon of backward binding. Drawing primarily on data from English, Polish, and Czech, it demonstrates that such coreference relations are governed by three key conditions: (1) linear precedence, (2) a structural constraint known as phase command ( Bruening 2014 ), and (3) the information structure status of the nominal antecedent, w…
The Person Case Constraint, Person Ordering Constraint and Pronominal Clusters in Polish
This contribution deals with preverbal clusters of deficient pronouns in Polish and combines an empirical study with a theoretical description inspired by Stegovec (2020). Polish pronouns are ill disciplined in comparison with their Slavic equivalents: they do not have a fixed position, they need not cluster together or with person-number auxiliaries and their cluster-internal ordering does not seem fixed (Franks and King 2000). These properties …

Undoing Wh-Movement
This contribution presents an outline of the current scholarly discussion of reconstruction with wh-movement, focussing on the Lebeaux Effect (LE) and wider aspects of reconstruction with wh-movement. It presents empirical problems for both the proposals based on the LE and the novel account of movement and reconstruction based on the notion of Minimal Copy. It points out that particular copies may differ not only in size (i.e., they do or do not…
Possessive pronouns, Condition C and Anti-Cataphora Effects
This presentation addresses the following research questions: (a) does Binding Condition C, prohibiting pronouns from occupying positions c-commanding coindexed names, operate in the same manner in the grammars of English and Polish (Slavic)? (b) why do possessive pronouns in Slavic languages cause an effect similar to Condition C?, and (c) which syntactic relation is responsible for the Anti-Cataphora Effect (ACE)? The question of why Condition …
Some aspects of agreement with numeral phrases in Polish
The aim of this article is to briefly analyze the agreement patterns in Polish constructions with quantified subjects and adjectival predicates/participles, and propose an account built on the nanosyntactic ideas regarding the nature of case, i.e., split Kase Phrase (Caha 2009, 2010). In the analysis we address the troublesome issues regarding the Genitive of Quantification, i.e., the source of Genitive on the nominal complement in structural con…
A note on the Genitive of Quantification in Polish and derivational phases
The major objective of this article is to discuss the status of nominal projections in Polish within the phase theory, with a special reference to the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC) (Chomsky 2000, 2001). Throughout the paper, it is argued that certain case marking properties internal to Polish QPs showing the Genitive of Quantification in particular, indicate that they do not observe the PIC in that the NP-complement domain to Q in [QP Q […
On Visser's Generalization
The article addresses the issue of Visser's Generalization (VG), holding that Subject Control verbs are incompatible with the passive, and proposes a solution based on a combination of the passive seen as smuggling and Obligatory Control seen as A-movement (Hornstein 2001, Hornstein & Polinsky 2010). The smuggling-type passive is perfectly compatible with the behavior of Object Control verbs, while also showing that in the case of passivized Subj…
Some Notes on Single Cycle Syntax and Genitive of Negation
This paper is an attempt at providing an account of Long GoN within the system of minimalismbased on case-agreement and single cycle syntax, closely related to the system developed in Chomsky (J998, 1999, 2000). First, we propose that a successful relation of case-agreement can be established not only between full Probes and complete Goals but also between 'split' Probes and complete Goals. We define a 'split' Probe as a (predefined) pair of head…
