  • Effects of animacy and executive functions in Mandarin-speaking children’s processing of relative clauses

Open Access•Yuxin Yang, Fabrizio Arosio et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2026

This study investigated how animacy cues and executive functions (i.e., working memory [WM], inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility) influence 4- to 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children’s processing of subject relative clauses and object relative clauses (ORCs). Using a self-paced listening task combined with a picture selection task, two experiments tested distinct animacy configurations. Experiment 1 employed relative clauses (RCs) with…

  • Predicting developmental language disorders using artificial intelligence and a speech data analysis tool

Eleonora Beccaluva, Fabio Catania et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2023

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects children's comprehension and production of spoken language without any known biomedical condition. The importance of early identification of DLD is widely acknowledged. Several studies have explored DLD predictors to identify children needing further diagnostic investigation. Most of these measures might be problematic for young children and bilingual children. Based on literature reporting fragile rh…

  • Morphosyntax and logical abilities in Italian poor readers

Open Access•Fabrizio Arosio, Elena Pagliarini et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2016

The study investigated morphosyntactic abilities and semantic-pragmatic competence in 24 children with developmental dyslexia aged 7 -12 years. Morphosyntactic abilities were investgated in a direct object clitic production task, semantic-pragmatic competence in a quantifier comprehension task. Children with dyslexia produced fewer clitics than their age controls and vocabulary controls. Ten children with dyslexia scored less than 1.5 SD below th…

  • How do 5-year-olds understand questions? Differences in languages across Europe

    Open Access•Uli Sauerland, Kleanthes K Grohmann et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2016

The comprehension of constituent questions is an important topic for language acquisition research and for applications in the diagnosis of language impairment. This article presents the results of a study investigating the comprehension of different types of questions by 5-year-old, typically developing children across 19 European countries, 18 different languages, and 7 language (sub-)families. The study investigated the effects of two factors …
