What Transnational Students Would Like to Say to Their Teachers in Mexican Schools
This article brings to light the often-overlooked educational disruptions of transnational students—those who move from schools in the United States to schools in Mexico. To do so, I adopt an innovative technique developed by Theodore Sizer known as the “fiction/non-fiction” approach. This method allows researchers to portray school dynamics through composite characters who are fictional, yet whose experiences and words are grounded in real event…

The Crucial Impact of Theoretical Lenses in Studying Members of the 1.5 Generation Returning to Mexico
International Migrant Returnees as Strategists: Mexican Parents Moving with Their Children from the United States to Mexico
This article offers a critical perspective to studies often found in the literature on return migration, especially in the way in which the experiences of returned migrants are narrated and explained. In these studies, migrants appear as defenseless victims, by-products of macrostructural processes, or discarded by systemic forces that no one can oppose. In contrast, in this article, I provide an analysis of twenty-four stories of Mexican migrant…
Le nouveau maitre de la mondialisation: La logistique
La logistique et ses monstres is a work of discussion, reflection, and critique that echoes the collective effort undertaken in Globalization from Below: The World's Other Economy (Mathews, Lins Ribeiro, and Alba Vega, 2012). Both books highlight little-visible dimensions of globalization. Globalization from Below reveals the strength of an economy not driven by large corporations, but powered by billions of small traders, following multiple rout…

Children’s voices about ‘return’ migration from the United States to Mexico: The 0.5 generation
Since 2004, our research has focused precisely in those minors who ‘returned’ from the United States to Mexico. Our interest has been to know the social, geographical, educational, and symbolic trajectories of those migrant children and adolescents who are part of the contemporary move of returnees. Based on the children’s narratives (all collected before US November 2016 federal election), we now have a multifaceted response to the question: How…
An imperfect realignment: The movement of children of immigrants and their families from the United States to Mexico
Over the past 15 years, hundreds of thousands of children of immigrants and their families have moved from the United States to Mexico pushed by different legal and economic expulsion factors. Using evidence from a multi-sited, twenty year-long study of Mexican migration to Georgia, we analyze the varied educational, linguistic, employment and family reunification experiences of children of immigrants in two communities of origin in central and n…

Identifying the Anthropological in a Mixed-Methods Study of Transnational Students in Mexican Schools
Identifying surveying as more commonly sociological and semistructured interviewing as more commonly anthropological, which describes disciplinary histories more than any fixed formulas, we juxtapose transnational students' survey answers collected in Mexican schools with their answers to interviewers several months later. From this, we consider what can be learned about research methodology and transnational student cosmology when different meth…

Going to a home you have never been to: The return migration of Mexican and American-Mexican children
Focusing on children's experience-driven cosmologies revealed through interviews and survey responses, this article seeks to analyse and interpret the way children explain their migration from the USA to Mexico within the context of increases in both voluntary and forced return migration of Mexicans since 2005. It draws from representative samples of students (aged 9–16) enrolled in both public and private schools in several Mexican states, which…

What the Youngest Transnational Students Have to Say About Their Transition From U.S. Schools to Mexican Ones
For 5 years, this research team has sought to learn from more than 700 students encountered in Mexican schools, who had previous experience attending schools in the United States. Although this study has used mixed methods, 1 tool—the written survey—has proven particularly valuable as a means to build profiles of such transnational students. Now, however, from new interview research carried out in Puebla in 2010, there are lengthy interviews from…

Pensando en Cynthia y su Hermana: Educational Implications of United States-Mexico Transnationalism for Children
We use 3 brief educational biographies of students in Mexico who have previously attended public school in the United States to introduce this literature review on United States–Mexico transnational students. This article is also the first of several planned articles stemming from a currently ongoing, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia-supported research study. As such, the purpose here is to highlight some of the dynamics faced by students…

From Nuevo León to the USA and Back Again: Transnational Students in Mexico
The movement of Mexicans to the United States is both longstanding and long studied and from that study we know that for many newcomers the attachment to the receiving community is fraught and tentative. The experience of immigrant children in U.S. schools is also relatively well studied and reveals challenges of intercultural communication as well as concurrent and contradictory features of welcome and unwelcome. What is less well known, in the …

The U.S.-Mexico Border: Transcending Divisions, Contesting Identities
The Changing Face of Border Culture Studies
In the 1980s, the U.S.-Mexico border was seen alternatively as a zone of U.S. culturalimperialism and as a privileged site of the assertion of Mexican culture and values. Today, some argue it is a crucible of new, hybrid identities, while others suggest that it isa site of multiple and contradictory action not easily characterized by a single metaphor

Understanding American Mexican Children
In 1997, when we first met while independently conducting field work in Whitfield County, Georgia, and its county seat, Dalton, we heard from local principals and teachers that Latino students sometimes "disappeared" from the schools. Most of these who disappeared were immigrant students from Mexico and other Central American countries, students who had arrived suddenly in local schools while accompanying their parents who found jobs in the carpe…
