  • A first toast in Kuyavia: New evidence for drinking rituals in Neolithic Europe from Sławęcinek, Poland

Open Access•Łukasz Kowalski, Kamil Adamczak et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2026

Excavations at Sławęcinek in central Poland, have yielded evidence for the Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture, concurrent with a sweeping set of changes that occurred across much of Europe in the mid-fourth millennium BC. A set of vessels containing collared flasks, ceramic glasses and a beaker were found, demonstrating that libations of lactose-reduced dairy beverages were performed between 3500–3350 BC. One of the vessels, a funnel beaker, feature…

  • A medium‐throughput approach for improved taxonomic identification of lipids preserved in ancient pottery

Open Access•Léa Drieu, Jane Lundy et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 62

Organic residue analysis (ORA) is a valuable tool for the study of ancient diets, but conventional methods remain limited in terms of taxonomic identification or to resolve mixtures. Here, we propose a method to further explore a class of compounds—triacylglycerols (TAGs)—using high‐resolution mass spectrometry to overcome these limitations in an attempt to better characterise culinary practices. Over 70 medieval Sicilian pots and a wide range of…

  • From Roman Table to Anglo-Saxon Grave: An Archaeological Biography of the Scremby Cup

Open Access•Hugh Willmott, Lenore Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2024

The presence of Roman material in early Anglo-Saxon graves in England is well documented, and recent excavations at Scremby in Lincolnshire have revealed a complete copper-alloy enamelled drinking cup in a sixth-century ad female burial. Not only is such a Roman vessel a very rare find, but also its inclusion in an early medieval grave makes it a unique example of the reuse of an antique object in a funerary context. This article presents a typol…

  • Culinary continuity in central Japan across the transition to agriculture

    Open Access•Jane Lundy, Manon Bondetti et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Rice and millet arrived in Western Japan from Korea around 3,000 years ago and spread eastwards across the archipelago in the next 700 years. However, the extent to which agriculture transformed traditional Jōmon hunter-gatherer-fisher communities is debated. Central Japan is a key area of study as remodelling of radiocarbon dates shows a slowdown in the dispersal rate of rice agriculture in this area. Here, we examine and compare the use of pott…

  • Investigating the formation and diagnostic value of ω ‐( o ‐alkylphenyl)alkanoic acids in ancient pottery

    Open Access•Manon Bondetti, E Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2021•Cited by: 19•References: 36

Long‐chain ω ‐( o‐ alkylphenyl)alkanoic acids (APAAs) derived from the heating of unsaturated fatty acids have been widely used for the identification of aquatic products in archaeological ceramic vessels. To date, little attention has been paid to the diagnostic potential of shorter chain ( 20 ) APAAs, despite their frequent occurrence. Here, a range of laboratory and field experiments and analyses of archaeological samples were undertaken to in…

  • Is it possible to identify ancient wine production using biomolecular approaches

Open Access•Léa Drieu, Maxime Rageot et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2020

Chemical analysis of archaeological artefacts is used with increasing regularity to understand how wine was produced, traded, and consumed in the past and to shed light on its antiquity. Based both on an extensive review of the published literature and on new analyses, here we critically evaluate the diverse range of methodological approaches that have been used for wine identification. Overall, we conclude that currently none of the proposed che…

  • Ancient lipids document continuity in the use of early hunter–gatherer pottery through 9,000 years of Japanese prehistory

Open Access•Alexandre Lucquin, K Gibbs et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2016

Significance Pottery has had a central role in human society for many millennia, but the reasons for the emergence and spread of this technology are poorly understood. First invented by groups of hunter–gatherers living in East Asia during the last glacial period, production only began to flourish with rising global temperatures in the Holocene, but the reasons for its uptake and spread are unknown. Through chemical analysis of their contents, we…

  • Age and Language Skills of Deaf Children in Relation to Theory of Mind Development

    Jane Lundy, J E B Lundy•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2002

Using four traditional false-belief tasks, I investigated deaf children's age and expressive language skills in relation to their theory of mind development. The children's parents who signed reported on their own knowledge of a mental sign vocabulary. The results indicate age of the child to be strongly related to theory of mind development. Deaf children demonstrated an ability to pass the theory of mind assessment battery between the ages of 7…

  • Cognitive learning from games: Student approaches to business games

    Jane Lundy•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1991

The effectiveness of games and simulations is investigated from the point of view of the enhancement of cognitive learning. It is found that this is greatly affected by different approaches which students take and by what influences their preparation of the game in question. It is further found that competitiveness tends to have a negative effect on cognitive learning gains and that learning is enhanced through advance briefing and tutor involvem…
