  • The role of social identity strategies in the cultural transitions of international students: Social creativity, social mobility and place identity

    Open Access•Kendal Mersh, Timothy Auburn•ARTICLE•SN Social Sciences•2021

  • Disabled or differently-enabled? Dyslexic identities in online forum postings

    Christine Marmé Thompson, Christine Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This study presents a novel exploration into how people with dyslexia construct personal identities within anonymous, unsolicited, postings to an online discussion forum. An interpretational phenomenological analysis suggested three key identities: learning-disabled, differently-enabled and societally-disabled. These are discussed in terms of the extent to which they draw differentially on a discourse of disability as opposed to one of individual…

  • Identity and placement learning: Student Accounts of the Transition Back to University Following a Placement Year

    Timothy Auburn•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 13

There has been an increasing emphasis on employability within the higher education curriculum. Supervised work experience, particularly in the form of a placement year, has been an established means of providing experiences which are intended to enhance employability. This study examines a relatively neglected but important aspect of supervised work experience, i.e. the return from the placement organisation to the final year of the degree progra…

  • Narrative reflexivity as a repair device for discounting 'cognitive distortions' in sex offender treatment

    Open Access•Timothy Auburn•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2005•Cited by: 13•References: 5

The treatment of imprisoned sex offenders has been an established feature of the English prison system for several years. A core concept in such treatment has been 'cognitive distortion'. In this article, an argument was made for treating this concept as a social resource for those participating in treatment rather than as a pathological mental entity afflicting those being treated. An analysis of narratives produced by offenders of their crimes …

  • The Social Construction of Rape in the Talk of a Convicted Rapist

    Open Access•Susan Lea, Timothy Auburn•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•2001•Cited by: 16•References: 9

The study used a discursive approach to explore the rape narratives of a convicted rapist. These narratives were recounted during the group therapy sessions of a prison-based Sex Offender Treatment Programme (SOTP). The analysis suggested that the offender drew on two main practical ideologies (Wetherell et al., 1987) in recounting his version(s) of the rape. These practical ideologies, which often embodied popular rape myths, served to construct…

  • You Punched Him, didn't You: Versions of Violence in Accusatory Interviews

    Open Access•Timothy Auburn, Sue Drake et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•1995•Cited by: 12•References: 1

This paper explores the management in police-suspect interviews of accusations of violent involvement. Eleven officially taperecorded interviews between police and suspects were transcribed and analysed and a basic grammar of violent accusations was identified. Different ways in which accusations are warranted and contested are discussed and instantiated. It is suggested that the interview participants use two discourses of violence: disorderly a…

  • Psychology undergraduates' experience of placements: A role-transition perspective

Timothy Auburn, Ann Ley et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 10

The experiences of a year-long sandwich placement for psychology undergraduates and the effects of this experience on attitudinal and skill outcomes were investigated. A transition model of the placement experience was presented which described the placement as one stage in a series of role transitions between higher education and work. A survey was conducted in which two cohorts of psychology undergraduates (totalN = 412) were recruited. A propo…
