Practice‐based educational and theatre research
Practice‐based research (PBR) has emerged as a valuable alternative to traditional scientific methods by generating knowledge through practice and enhancing the relevance of research to practitioners. However, knowledge about PBR has largely been developed within disciplinary silos, leading to its limited cross‐disciplinary understanding. This paper addresses this gap by analysing 116 PBR studies in Educational Research and Theatre, two fields wi…
Research quality criteria in the Creative Arts
This paper investigates research quality criteria in the Creative Arts (CA). The CA has been introduced into the higher education and research sector over the last three decades. It is thus a relatively new research field and there is little empirical knowledge on how outputs in this field should be evaluated. Our study applies a mixed-method approach to assess the relevance of quality criteria used in performance-based research funding systems (…
‘Talking sense’ about art
This article is concerned with collective judgement-making in the theatre field. Using the empirical case of expert theatre panels, it explores the rules of communicating, testing, and validating judgements in social interactions. The research is based on interviews with 30 theatre critics who served on review panels at the National Contemporary Polish Drama Staging Competition. The results shed light on what kind of statements, behaviour, and ac…
The impact of theatre on social competencies

This paper presents a meta-analysis evaluating the impact of theatre interventions on social competencies. METHODS: Twenty-one primary studies totaling 4064 participants were included, presenting evidence available since 1983. Included studies were assessed in terms of quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias. RESUL…
Academic research evaluation in artistic disciplines
This study focuses on the evaluation of artistic disciplines (visual and performing arts) within performance-based university research funding systems. Evaluation in Interaction
The aim of this paper is to discuss the pragmatic approach to studying artistic evaluation. The paper engages with recent literature and examines current trends in research on amateur and expert artistic judgement, arguing that the pragmatic scholarship has much to offer to the sociology of art and culture. It demonstrates the growth of qualitative research inspired by interpretivist approaches and symbolic interactionism, highlighting the main a…
Science policy as implicit cultural policy
This paper is concerned with the evaluation of artistic production within the Polish science policy. It analyses the performance-based research funding system (PRFS) in Polish higher arts education and discusses the assessment techniques and value hierarchies underlying the evaluation model. We analyse data from the Integrated System of Information on Science and Higher Education, to examine the cultural activity of artists-academics in Poland an…
The impact of theatre on empathy and self-esteem
This study presents the results of meta-analyses evaluating the effects of active theater on empathy and self-esteem. The effect size of the impact of theater-making on empathy showed that theater has a positive, although moderate influence on empathic abilities. The meta-analysis concerning self-esteem did not confirm the impact of active theater on the outcome in question, but this result should be treated with caution due to heterogeneity. The…
Artistic quality and consensus decision-making
Although panel reviewing is frequently used in the allocation of public cultural funds, the internal functioning of artistic panels has received little attention in cultural and sociological studies. This article examines panel reviewing in the field of theatre. Based on in-depth interviews with panel experts, it analyses factors that are influential in terms of procedural and substantive aspects of decision-making. Our investigation deals with: …
Striving for Consensus
Researchers have studied how artistic judgments are made in group interactions, but much remains to be known about artistic evaluations in decision-making settings where agreements need to be reached. This paper analyzes panel evaluations of artistic productions, drawing on interviews with panelists from a Polish theater competition. The article focuses on two aspects of panel decision-making: (1) concepts of artistic value that members of expert…
Culture, democracy and the right to make art
The aim of this edited volume is to trace the developments and transitions in British community arts from the 1960s until today. However, it is not a history book but rather a collection of insight
Are polish theatres autonomous? Artistic institutions in a bureaucratic system of culture funding
The culture funding systems based on the arm's length mechanism are generally believed to secure more autonomy of artistic institutions than ‘bureaucratic’ systems which directly involve politicians or public servants in the allocation of public funds. There is a wide range of academic literature that defend this approach. The aim of this paper is to readdress this view and show that it stems from typology-based preconceptions rather than real-li…
License to judge
This paper endeavours to examine different types of expertise in cultural policy. Unlike other conceptual studies, it focuses on the abstract notion of expertise i.e. the different forms of cognition and knowledge deployed in cultural policy, rather than the personage of an expert. The article proposes a distinction between arts expertise and technocratic expertise and employs five analytical categories within which they are discussed and compare…

Using Isaiah Berlin’s two concepts of liberty to rethink cultural policy
The overarching aim of this paper is to rethink the normative aspects of Polish cultural policy after 1989, using a conceptual framework built upon Isaiah Berlin's two concepts of liberty. More specifically, this article aims to analyse the rhetoric used in cultural policy and the practice of policy-making, in order to uncover and characterise the normative role that the state has played in shaping and executing cultural policy in Poland after 19…
