Ekaterina Dyachenko, Alexey Zheleznov et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2026

The explosive growth of scientometric studies in climate research raises a critical question: do these analyses genuinely advance climate science? An analysis of 703 scientometric climate studies (1996–2023) reveals that this ‘Hockey stick’ pattern has been driven in part by discipline-specific mega-journals and by broader differences in national policy ambition. Despite concerns regarding ‘empty productivity’, compelling evidence indicates that …

Katerina Guba, Angelika Tsivinskaya•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2025

This paper explores the regulators’ perspective and demonstrates how legitimacy deficits of private universities outweigh performance results in decisions regarding university inspections. We examined the period when the regulator had an urgent claim on Russian universities, particularly during the campaign to ‘clean the system of higher education’ announced in 2013. The Russian case of delayed regulation provides a unique natural phenomenon for …

  • Ambiguity in Ethical Standards: Global Versus Local Science in Explaining Academic Plagiarism

Open Access•Katerina Guba, Angelika Tsivinskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Science and Engineering Ethics•2024

The past decade has seen extensive research carried out on the systematic causes of research misconduct. Simultaneously, less attention has been paid to the variation in academic misconduct between research fields, as most empirical studies focus on one particular discipline. We propose that academic discipline is one of several systematic factors that might contribute to academic misbehavior. Drawing on a neo-institutional approach, we argue tha…

    Katerina Guba•ARTICLE•Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniya•2021

  • Evaluating the Evaluators in Russia: When Academic Citizenship Fails

    Katerina Guba, Angelika Tsivinskaya•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2021•References: 13

We examined the role of peer review in the quality assurance system developed for the regulation of higher education institutions in Russia. Given their negative attitude towards the state’s attempts to increase control over universities, how can the participation of academics in regulatory activity be explained? This essay applies resource allocation theory to suggest that engagement in academic service might depend on an individual’s performanc…
