  • The experience of strangeness in education

    Aidan Curzon-Hobson, Aidan Curzon‐Hobson•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 8

When The Myth of Sisyphus describes those who live in the ‘rarefied air of the absurd’ (p. 86), Camus uses the word fidelity. This signals a recognition of both defeat and the demand for struggle. This suggests a humility. Education can be said to have this characteristic; it is constantly in service to the new and yet understands these come with limits. And these limits are overcome as education develops the mind to see differently and change th…

  • Extending the Contribution of Albert Camus to Educational Thought

    Aidan Curzon-Hobson, Aidan Curzon‐Hobson•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 3

    Aidan Curzon-Hobson, Aidan Curzon‐Hobson•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 1

They also lead us to other concepts that may have a place in educational debate, in particular the concepts of the absurd and rebellion. This train of thought also has potential for educational practice. If we accept that strangeness has a positive place in education, …

  • Higher Learning and the Critical Stance

    Aidan Curzon-Hobson, Aidan Curzon‐Hobson•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2003•Cited by: 7•References: 4

In engaging with a diverse range of philosophers, traditions and writers, this article develops and defends a concept of the critical stance. It is argued that the realisation of this ideal should be a goal for those teaching in higher education today. The critical stance refers to a particular manner in which students and teachers engage within the learning environment. This article argues that the critical stance is an attitude or disposition t…
