  • Rosa Luxemburg in Mexico

    Open Access•Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Perhaps no concept has shaped discussions of capitalism and its contemporary transformations more than that of ongoing primitive accumulation. This paper examines, accounts for, and unpacks how primitive accumulation came, within a certain genre of conversations, to be so central. While there have been prior critiques of its usage, notably by Robert Brenner, few have returned to the source of the modern framing of the concept, Rosa Luxemburg. Thr…

  • Detroit’s Water Wars

    Open Access•Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•CLCWeb Comparative Literature and…•2020

In this essay, I theorize an emergent urban power dynamic of infrastructural resource grabs or the use of state power to transfer infrastructural resources away from marginalized, racialized, and/or precariously documented populations. As a transfer, rather than a set of cuts or privatizations, I argue this dynamic is distinct from those of neoliberal or “shrinking” states and is a direct attack on the social reproduction capacity of communities …

  • Teleology in the Wake of Post-Structuralism

    Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2018•References: 9

Within the critical humanities there has been a recent return to Marxist and communist thought, which has meant a reckoning with post-structuralism. Thinkers, such as José Muñoz and Jodi Dean, who have been critical of parts of the post-structural legacy, have also held onto certain aspects of that tradition, in particular non-coincidence as a stay against identity, administration, and/or determination. However, they have done so in ways that hav…

  • Dans les replis de la reproduction

    Brian Whitener, Frederic Neyrat•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2018

  • From Racial Democracy to Credit Democracy

    Open Access•Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•Brasiliana- Journal for Brazilian…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 2

My aim in this article is to provide a first pass at thinking the social effects of this credit expansion which I do via credit as a form of public security. In the first part of this article, I chart the expansion of personal credit as a form of financial corporativism during PT governments in Brazil since 2003. As well, I trace some of the principle cultural mediations of credit and the role of Rio de Janeiro as the site of the production of th…

  • From ‘Stabilizing Development’ to Instant Ruins

    Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2015•References: 16

In this essay, I complicate the standard political economic narrative of Mexico's ‘stabilizing development’ as one of successful state intervention which managed to tame capitalism. In the first section, I ask whether it is possible that years of literature on the need for strong states, developmental states, and interventionist states have not blinded us to some of the actual functions of the post-war Mexican state, namely as a sink or channel f…

  • Ontology and Crises of State and Finance in Jorge Volpi'sEn busca de Klingsor

    Brian Whitener•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2015•References: 6

This essay examines Jorge Volpi's En busca de Klingsor in an attempt to explain its emergence as a cultural object in the 1990s in Mexico. I argue that the novel turns around what we might call hard indeterminism, ontology, or ‘worlding’ and that its obsession with how worlds are composed is a result of the novel's unique positioning in a moment marked by failed forms of finance-led accumulation and overall systemic financial crisis. Engaging wit…
