Sensing Rhabdomyolysis
Sensations have emerged as an increasingly important topic in anthropological studies of health and disease. In this article, I draw from ethnographic research conducted among people living with selected rare inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) and their caregivers in Poland, focusing specifically on recurrent rhabdomyolysis, a long-term complication that affects energy-consuming organs and muscles. Employing insights from sensorial and medical a…

‘Small’ data, isolated populations, and new categories of rare diseases in Finland and Poland
Health policy and academic discourses on rare diseases and people with rare conditions frequently employ terms such as 'low prevalence' and 'unique' to characterize the smallness of the population under consideration and to justify targeted action toward these patient groups. This paper draws from recent anthropological scholarship on smallness and data, ethnographic research in Finland and Poland, as well as document and media analysis to examin…
Antycypując przyszłość – diagnoza a doświadczenie w chorobach rzadkich w Polsce
Competing religious and biomedical notions of treatment
Drawing from ethnographic research with Jehovah’s Witnesses in Germany, in this chapter, I examine competing notions of health, the body, and choices of biomedical treatment through the lens of blood and refusals of blood transfusions. Jehovah’s Witnesses have become the most active proponents of a ‘no blood’ policy and bloodless medicine in the last decades. Focusing on the blood-transfusion-related hospital experiences of a Jehovah’s Witness, w…
Normalised Eating And Dietary Guidelines in LCHAD Deficiency
Dietary guidelines have become a ubiquitous feature of nutritional landscapes in a growing number of countries. Issued by departments or ministries of health and implemented by dietitians and health professionals, such guidelines are intended to govern the health of children and adults by regulating both the content and quantity of what they eat. While these dietary guidelines are intended for kids and adults who can and want to eat, they often s…
O (nie)naturalności jedzenia. Pokarmy i technologie biomedyczne w chorobach metabolicznych

Jehovah's Witness patients within the German medical landscape
Blood transfusions belong to standard and commonly utilised biomedical procedures. Jehovah's Witnesses' transfusion refusals are often referred to in bioethical and medical textbooks. Members of this globally active religious organisation do not, however, challenge biomedical diagnosis and treatment as such. A result of both their trust in and their interpretation of the Bible, they question only this medical treatment. In spite of the global pre…

Mormons as Citizens of a Communist State
Mormons as Citizens of a Communist State is an interesting, informative, and well-written volume by a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church; the Mormons), who served in the North German Mission from 1958 to 1960 and later in the Freiberg Temple, “the only temple of the Church built behind the Iron Curtain” (p. 261), opened in June 1985. The book was originally published in German in 2008 under the title Mormone…
Gender in the Discursive Practices of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Former East Germany
The author analyzes the construction of gender and gender roles among the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the former East Germany. From a religious point of view, wives and women in general are subordinate to their husbands, fathers, etc. Within a family and in congregations men are expected to “take the lead” and are responsible for their wives and children. In the former German Democratic Republic this religious discourse competed with the egalitarian a…
Religion and the Secular in Eastern Germany, 1945 to the present
The most common explanations view either the socialist past or larger scale processes of modernization to be the cause of eastern German secularization. The volume attempts to discover historically variable reconfigurations of religion and the secular at the local level.
Jehovah's Witnesses in Eastern Germany
The aim of the article is to look at the process of ‘reconfiguration’ of Jehovah's Witnesses' identity in the area which comprises the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and societal and state responses to it. Over 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall Jehovah's Witnesses are one of the largest minority religions in eastern Germany. Being a religious minority in a region that is both stigmatised by the socialist past and considered the …
