Just breathe! The impact of a slow-paced breathing intervention for teachers
The teaching profession globally is experiencing unprecedented levels of occupational distress, contributing to high rates of attrition, health problems, and reduced student outcomes. This study examined the effects of slow-paced breathing (SPB) at a rate of 6 breaths per minute, for 10 min daily across an eight-week period. Seventy six full-time teachers were randomly allocated to an intervention or control group, with psychological and physiolo…

Famous Assassinations in World History
Representing a unique reference tool for readers interested in history, criminology, or terrorism, this book provides the most complete and up-to-date coverage of assassinations of key figures throughout history and around the world. Effecting the death of a political figure, a leader of a nation, or a public figure usually captures people's attention. Freedom's Prisons
This article is a conversation with Diana Paton's study No Bond but the Law, which examines incarceration in emancipation era Jamaica. The analysis in this article focuses first on how Paton situates the Jamaican prison system within social transformations taking place across the late 18th and 19th century Atlantic World. The discussion then moves to Paton's engagement with Foucault, highlighting the vital importance of rethinking Foucault critic…
Did you hear about the Gaelic-speaking African
This is the first sustained attempt to gather historical documentation about Scottish Gaelic-speaking people of African descent in North America. Many Scottish Gaels contemplated the consequences of assimilating into whiteness in America, in order to access wealth and privilege. Gaels were not just losing their language and culture, they were adopting an Anglophone identity during a time of rabidly racist Anglo-Saxonism in America. The folk anecd…
The Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi
Since 1866 the Ku Klux Klan has been a significant force in Mississippi, enduring repeated cycles of expansion and decline. Klansmen have rallied, marched, elected civic leaders, infiltrated law enforcement, and committed crimes ranging from petty vandalism to assassination and mass murder. This is the definitive history of the KKK in Mississippi, long recognized as one of the group's most militant and violent realms. It details its complete hist…
A Self-management Concept for Men at the Community Level
The Waist Disposal Challenge consisted of a health intervention at the community level to bring about a reduction in body mass index (BMI) and is delivered at three levels: educational presentations on nutrition and exercise; monthly monitoring of BMI competition; telephone lifestyle coaching with follow-ups. Twenty-three Rotary Clubs participated in Western Australia in 2007-08 (750 Rotarians). The significant to moderate decreases in BMI are an…
Serial Killers (Criminal Investigations)
The Invisible Empire
In vivid, comprehensive, and often grim detail, Invisible Empire charts 130 years of Ku Klux Klan activity in Florida, one of the Klan's most violent and enduring realms. Beginning with the chaotic days of Reconstruction, when Klansmen killed more than 150 victims in a single county, this important history describes the organization's influence on Florida politics and its links to modern law enforcement. From the KKK's heyday during the 1920s and…
Institutions of Modern Spain. A Political and Economic Guide
Spain, its regions and the EU ‘Leader’ initiative
This paper examines the development of the EU's LEADER Initiative for integrated rural development. It is argued that the policy process, specific to the LEADER Initiative, has to be understood in terms of the development of a ‘policy community’ in Brussels and beyond, engaged in policy developments informed by a clear ‘integrationist’ philosophy. The paper goes on to examine the administrative arrangements created within Spain to implement the E…
