Anti-deforestation policy and supply chain governance: Perceptions by cattle ranchers and soy farmers in Brazil
Deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado, Brazil's two largest and most biodiverse biomes, is largely driven by the advance of the agricultural frontier toward forestland. Most of the areas converted in the last 20 years became either monocrop plantations or cattle pasture. From a socio-legal standpoint, this raises the question of how to regulate supply chain relationships in order reduce land-use change associated with soy and beef production. D…
On promised lands: Deintrusion as redress and the contrivance of land-grabbing
The Brazilian Constitution of 1988 recognized the original right to exclusive use over traditionally occupied lands to indigenous peoples. The fulfillment of this promise depends on the capacity of state organizations to evict invaders from indigenous recognized territory, by means of a legal-administrative instrument dubbed deintrusion. In recent years, alliances between politicians, landowners and religious leaderships have updated traditional …
Building and dismantling organisational capacity and bureaucratic identity: An analysis of Ibama’s civil service examinations (1989 – 2022)
This article investigates how the recruitment procedures for the selection of environmental inspectors in Ibama, Brazil’s leading federal environmental agency, have varied since the institution’s creation in 1989 until 2022. To explain the identified changes, the study considers the organisation’s accumulated experience and political context. It draws on 44 semi-structured interviews and analyses the content of all five examination booklets (cade…
Narrative
This chapter explores the discursive understanding of narratives: how the idea of narrative has been incorporated into the grammar of International Relations. Narratives are "equipments for living", tools to understand, negotiate and make sense of situations we encounter a mode of reasoning and a mode of representation, a way to conceive of and also tell about the world'. Most contributions that engage with the concept of narrative in IR, or what…

International relations and the problem of difference
Borders of Solidarity: Life in Displacement in the Amazon Tri-Border Region
In 2004, the representatives of Latin American countries, gathered in Mexico City, devised a multilateral Plan of Action (MPA) in order to foster an improvement on refugee protection mechanisms in the region. Among its many proposals, the document advanced the idea of borders of solidarity. The proposal calls attention to new forms of thinking about border zones and border lives and how different actors might dialogue to improve the reception, as…
