Contested and unheard voices within the asylum framework – participation challenges of unaccompanied minors in Germany and Norway: Angezweifelte und Ignorierte Ansichten im Rahmen des Asylsystems – Pa…
The construction of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMAs) as a vulnerable group places UMAs into a social category that the welfare state is required to deal with. In general, welfare states have the choice of addressing UMAs' needs, either under the scope of the asylum system combined with special provisions, or to place them on a separate track and thus exclude them from ordinary migration framework. This article takes a comparative analysi…
Children in dual‐residence arrangements: Exploring discourses of fairness and children's best interest in Norway
In many countries, dual residence is increasingly common for children when parents separate. This works well for many children, but opinions differ on whether or not it should be the norm. In analysing interviews with 35 nine‐ to 19‐year‐olds with dual‐residence experience in Norway, undertaken in 2018, we find clear traces of prevailing discourses in society. Claims of equality and fairness and claims of children's rights both emerge, the latter…
The circumstances of migrant families raising children with disabilities in five European countries: Updating knowledge and pursuing new research
In 2017, specialists in several fields (health, education, and social work) from five European countries (France, Georgia, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland) established a network to jointly pursue studies on migration and disability. An initial workshop provided an opportunity to discuss their previous individual work and to develop a comparative research project. This article presents the key aspects of the discussion and the resulting plans for c…
To forskjellige hjem – Barn om deltbosted

Trajectories of ambivalence and trust: Experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors resettling in Norway
Unaccompanied refugee minors are vulnerable due to previous and current experiences, yet often resourceful when resettling in a host country. Their experiences of ambivalence and trust in relationships with transnational family, peers and social workers have not been extensively researched. Using a qualitative longitudinal research design, we followed unaccompanied refugee youths during their first two years of resettlement in Norway. In our unde…
Méthodologie : Les do…
How do immigrant parents of children with complex health needs manage to cope in their daily lives
Daily life with children who have complex health needs can be stressful for parents. Immigrant parents are vulnerable to stress because they may lack language skills and knowledge about the health care system and have limited social networks. In this study, we focus on how immigrant parents of children with complex health needs use emotion‐focused and problem‐focused coping strategies to manage their daily life, and how their self‐efficacy and th…

The Status of the Asylum-seeking Child in Norway and Denmark: Comparing Discourses, Politics and Practices
This article discusses how asylum-seeking children are positioned in discourse, politics and practice in Norway and Denmark through a comparative analysis of schooling, the use of hearings in asylum cases, and the grounds for being granted humanitarian residence permits. Building on Laclau’s theory of hegemony created through discursive struggles for universality over particularity, the article concludes that while in Norway a discourse of nation…
Asylum, Participation and the Best Interests of the Child: New Lessons from Norway
This article discusses Norway's implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in relation to the field of asylum. In particular, we explore the dilemmas and challenges posed by efforts to realise children's right to express their views and have these views given due weight in decision‐making processes as stipulated in Article 12 of the CRC. The Norwegian authorities have sought to uphold this right through the introduction of …
