With and beyond museums. Cultural heritage work in the Somali diaspora
This article looks at how new diaspora communities are carrying out heritage work with and outside museums. Based on a multidisciplinary theoretical framework, extensive research materials and long-term collaboration with Somalis who have been involved in museum and exhibition projects in Finland, our ethnographic study illustrates how Somalis cherish and talk about their cultural heritage in diaspora. Our analysis reveals the complexity of diasp…

Introduction: Contemporary African and Black Diasporic Spaces in Europe
This special issue explores spaces where identifications with the African diaspora become articulated, (re)negotiated and, as demonstrated by many articles in this issue, established as a field of the collective agency with transformative power in European societies. The African diaspora communities and cultures in Europe are constructed not only by individuals’ engagements in Africa and its global diaspora but also through the collective agency,…
Music and Anti-Racism: Musicians’ Involvement in Anti-Racist Spaces
This article explores connections between music and anti-racism. Based on our analyses of recent anti-racist demonstrations and musical media productions, we have constructed an ethnographic description of musicians’ involvement in anti-racism in Finland. Our study makes visible how in predominantly white societies, individual musicians’ own relations to (anti-)racism, as well as different articulations and meanings of race in general, have becom…
Music as a site for Africanness and diaspora cultures: African musicians in the white landscape of Finland
This article looks at African musicians in Finland and the ways that they negotiate ideas of ‘Africanness’ in their professional activities. The specific environment of Finland with a relatively low number of people of African descent inevitably shapes the activities of these musicians. Our analysis, based on our many years of fieldwork among African diaspora communities, makes visible the multiplicity of sites where African music is played and p…
Racializing categorization among young people in Finland
This article explores the terms by which racial difference is articulated and constructed in the everyday life of young people in Finland, by analysing interviews with children and adolescents who have one parent with an immigrant or foreign background, or who have been adopted from other countries. In addition to the categories that clearly arise from the discourses of race, expressions that in other contexts may have nothing to do with racism a…
