  • Aesthetic Republicanism in Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony

Open Access•Boris Maslov, Борис Маслов et al.•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2023

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fourteenth symphony, marked by an experimental and politically charged libretto, is set to verses by four poets, including a piece by Wilhelm Küchelbecker that the composer discovered in Yuri Tynianov’s historical novel Kiukhlia: Story of a Decembrist . Considered in light of the manifold intellectual ties between Shostakovich and Tynianov, the use of Küchelbecker’s poem can be seen to have major implications for the idea of…

Shengyu Wang, Paulo Henriques Brito•ARTICLE•Folklore•2023•Cited by: 1

Yetan suilu (Jottings of nighttime talks) by Hebang’e is a late eighteenth-century Chinese collection of ‘anomaly accounts’. Besides providing an annotated translation of ‘Huisha wuze’, this article al…

  • Staging Noh Performance in Contemporary Opera: The Dance of the Shite in Toshio Hosokawa's The Maiden from the Sea (2017)

Paulo Brito, Paulo Henriques Brito et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Music•2023

Toshio Hosokawa's The Maiden from the Sea, based on the noh drama Futari Shizuka, is an innovative opera that culminates unusually in a voiceless performance of noh dance. Considering this moment from the dual perspective of contemporary authored music and traditional noh choreography, this article shows that, in the dance, the opera paradoxically distances itself from its noh source play while simultaneously approximating the multidisciplinarity…

  • Contraponto métrico e semantização da forma num poema de Fernando Pessoa

    Open Access•Paulo Henriques Brito•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Tradução•2014

Relying on the notion of metrical counterpoint developed in an earlier article, the author demonstrates the existence of a dense metrical structure in Fernando Pessoa’s poem “Pierrot bêbado” which may be analyzed as consisting of two levels in a relationship of counterpoint. It is also shown that the metrical counterpoint interacts with the semantic level, in that the character of Pierrot mentioned in the title appears in the body of the poem mos…
