Developing and Setting Up a Lung Cancer Triage Phoneline For Rural West Wales
The incidence of people diagnosed with and living with cancer in the UK is increasing and by 2030, 1 in 2 people will develop cancer (The Cancer Delivery Plan 2016-2020 WAG). Health care providers must explore innovative ways to provide quality care both in terms of outcomes and patient experience set against the challenge of finite resources. Within Wales there are over 2,300 patients diagnosed with lung cancer each year, however less than 20% o…

Where is ‘There is’ in ‘∃’
The paper offers a survey of four key moments in which symbolisms for quantification were first introduced: §§11–2 of Frege’s Begriffsschrift (1879); Peirce’s ‘Algebra of Logic’ (1885); Peano’s ‘Studii di Logica matematica’ (1897); and *9 (‘replaced’ by *8 in the second edition) of Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica (1910). Despite their divergent aims, these authors present substantially equivalent visions of what their differing symb…
The culture of disciplines: Reconceptualising multi‐subject curricula
The arts are recognised for their potential to humanise and enrich educational experience, but hold a lowly position in the hierarchy of school subject‐based curricula. This limits the time, and thus the influence, they can have. Whilst schools welcome the idea of a curriculum rich with both arts and science subjects, resistance to realising this is often advanced in terms of the proportion of curriculum time required for different subjects. Argu…
Risk of Covid-19 among front-line health-care workers and the general community: A prospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: Data for front-line health-care workers and risk of COVID-19 are limited. We sought to assess risk of COVID-19 among front-line health-care workers compared with the general community and the effect of personal protective equipment (PPE) on risk. METHODS: We did a prospective, observational cohort study in the UK and the USA of the general community, including front-line health-care workers, using self-reported data from the COVID Sym…
Framing ‘fracking’: Exploring public perceptions of hydraulic fracturing in the United Kingdom
The prospect of fracking in the United Kingdom has been accompanied by significant public unease. We outline how the policy debate is being framed by UK institutional actors, finding evidence of a dominant discourse in which the policy approach is defined through a deficit model of public understanding of science and in which a technical approach to feasibility and safety is deemed as sufficient grounds for good policymaking. Deploying a delibera…
Youth work and ethics: Why the ‘professional turn’ won’t do
Youth work is deemed to require a distinctive commitment to ethical behaviour from the adults involved. This is expressed in the requirements for the initial education of workers, in the subject benchmarks and national expectations for youth workers. A significant influence in this debate is Howard Sercombe. Sercombe seeks a substantive framework for youth work ethics. The project offers clear potential benefits alongside equally great dangers. H…
Ceaselessly Exploring, Arriving Where We Started and Knowing It for the First Time
In this paper I explore the implications of the increasing social and sociable uses of new, mobile internet associated technologies (MIATs) for online learning. In particular I focus on tablet computers as at the vanguard of this shift. Drawing on discourses of technobiophilia and phatic communion, the propositions explored in this paper are that: (a) that internet associated technologies have been shaped by and reflect the ways in which humans e…
Mysterious Mixtures: Descartes on Mind and Body
As is well known, Descartes’ doctrine on the relations of mind and body involves at least the following two theses: (i) the real distinction of mind and body is compatible with their substantial union; and (ii) the siting of the mind at the tip of the pineal gland is compatible with its presence throughout the body. This essay seeks to perform three main tasks. One is to suggest that, so far as Descartes is concerned, the doctrine that arises out…
Correlation between Global Rating Scale and Specific Checklist Scores for Professional Behaviour of Physical Therapy Students in Practical Examinations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the specific item checklist (checklist) and global rating scale (GRS) scores are correlated in practical skills examinations (PSEs). Professional behaviour was evaluated using both the checklist and GRS scores for 183 students in three PSEs. Mean, standard deviation, and correlation for checklist and GRS scores were calculated for each station, within each PSE. Pass rate for checklist and …

The Diocesan Population Returns for 1563 and 1603
"This comprehensive edition makes available two of the most important sources for population studies in the early modern period. The bishops' returns of 1563 and 1603 represent the earliest census-type information that has survived in England and Wales. The 1563 returns, surviving from twelve dioceses, record the number of households; the 1603 documents, from nine dioceses, were intended to survey religious nonconformity and estimate the number o…
Inventing Sam Slick: A Biography of Thomas Chandler Haliburton
Based on over ten years of archival research, Richard A. Davies's scholarly biography of Haliburton is the first since 1924. It is an engaging examination of a controversial and contradictory Canadian writer and significant figure in the history of pre-confederation Nova Scotia.

Social Isolation and Loneliness in Old Age: Review and Model Refinement
This paper reviews the empirical literature on social isolation and loneliness and identifies a wide range of published correlates. Using data from a study conducted in North Wales, which included many of the same correlated variables, a statistical modelling technique is used to refine models of isolation and loneliness by controlling for co-variance. The resulting models indicate that the critical factors for isolation are: marital status, netw…

The Sizewell B Nuclear Inquiry: An Analysis of Public Participation in Decisionmaking about Nuclear Power
If a public hearing into a proposed new nuclear power plant were merely a search for information, then the present Inquiry into plans to build Britain's first pressurized water reactor (PWR) would surely be judged a success. The detailed evidence and testimony on the station's safety, economics, and environmental impact already forms a mountain of paper several hundred feet high-according to the state-owned Central Electricity Generating Board (C…
Dynamic Models of Shopping Behaviour: Testing the Linear Learning Model and Some Alternatives
Stochastic process models are identified as a suitable framework within which to examine dynamic consumer choice behaviour and to test the assumptions which underlie other simple behavioural models. A distinction is drawn between choice series and renewal series and the concepts of heterogeneity, non-stationarity and feedback are introduced. Some empirical problems in the testing of stochastic process models are discussed and illustrated by refer…
