Framing the regime shift concept: An epistemological analysis of a central ecological notion in the context of the North Sea cod crisis
The regime shift concept is a popular scientific framework to analyze abrupt changes in marine ecosystems. The collapse of North Sea cod ( Gadus morhua ) represents a paradigmatic example of such a change. Although this process is framed as a regime shift in science, a common understanding of the concept seems to be scarce. We conducted interviews with stakeholders in the German context associated with the North Sea, aiming at analyzing the conce…
Rather with than About - Reshaping Qualitative Empirical Research Methods in Times of Physical Distancing
Face-to-face participatory research and interaction is at the heart of empirical social research. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting physical distance restrictions had a significant impact on qualitative research. Instantly, conventional qualitative social science methods had to be adapted to 'remote' and digital modes of interaction. The focus of this article is to analyze how and why video-mediated formats such as online conference tools a…

Cultural geographies of coastal change
This special section grew out of a series of contributions presented in the context of the international symposium “Managing coastal change and climate vulnerability: questions of space, place and landscape”, held at Hamburg University (Germany) in November 2015. All papers are based on the insight that coasts are partially solidified zones of fluid transition holding extreme and powerful dynamics which make it worthwhile exploring pressing issue…
Synthetic biology in the German press: How implications of metaphors shape representations of morality and responsibility
Synthetic biology (SynBio) represents a relatively young field of research which has developed into an important scientific endeavour. Characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinary work crossing disciplinary boundaries, such as biology, mathematics and engineering, SynBio has been, since its beginning, devoted to creating new biological functions, metabolic pathways or even minimal organisms. Although its often-articulated aim of developing…
Coastal landscapes: The relevance of researching coastscapes for managing coastal change in North Frisia
Studies on the socio‐cultural dimensions of perceiving and framing landscapes represent a well‐established interdisciplinary field of research cutting across the disciplines of geography, anthropology and sociology. Most studies to date converge in the fact that they theoretically and methodologically revolve around textual and symbolic landscape approaches to investigate underlying social representations and practices permeating the physical lan…

A sequence of ‘factishes’: The media-metaphorical knowledge dynamics structuring the German press coverage of the human genome
This article deals with the cultural framing of the near sequencing of the human genome and its impact on the media coverage in Germany. It investigates in particular the way in which the weekly journal Die Zeit and the daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau reported this media event and its aftermath between June 2000 and June 2001. Both newspapers are quality papers that played an essential role in framing the human genome debate--alongside the …
